I spend $400 a month, but my payments are $369, plus I pay two times a month to cut down on the interest. Really it's all in how you manage your expenses. If you're money-smart, then it can work out just fine. If you're not, on the other hand, well...
im with this guy. the s2000 reliability is poop. if you are as brokas me, which it possible seeing that i am 18 making about the same as you, i would go buy a more reliable car or stick with the car you have now.

there are a couple particular issues with the older cars, timing chain tensioners, rear differentials, etc.

yeah its because people beat the **** out of there cars, launch them, and dont do proper maintenance... The S is a great car and if you have to second guess it you shouldnt be driving one...

Well what he should to is sell his car for the 7 he wants then put it down on the loan and only pull out 9k then pay lower payments. play it safe. Im 20 make 16.33 hour about 2000 a month take home. + live by myself + building the engine. gets a little stressfull. ohh yeah my payment is 280 a month but ins. is 380. looking at some other ins. right now.

I am a second owner of a 00 Berlina Black S2K. I got it with 69k and now its at 74k. I dont know what your talking about when you say its not realiable. If you dont launch it @7k 24/7 nor drift it with the clutch instead of powering over the rear will be fine. I drive my car pretty hard when I get a chance and nothing happens. If you actually know how to drive the S2K then its pretty reliable.
I fukin love my S!

I fukin love my S!
i have the same situation with you...I wanna get an S2K and i make 11.50 an hour with 30 hours a week making around 800 to 900 a month while full time student at college getting good grades B+ and A's....My dad said he would help me just a bit on a car and i get living expenses so do u think i should?
My personal advice.
If you must finance, try and get a student loan. Interest rates are cheaper. Finance school and pay the car out of pocket.
If this is not an option then WAIT. I am 24 first year out of school 7000+ saved. have a 2000 si with 79k and all i want is a s2k. Because I am commissioned I do not want to cash in my savings and ira to pay for this car and I hate paying interest. Also I love to mod my cars I would hate modding a car that could potentially be taken away from me for not making the payments. Also my driving records could be better. Insurance will be high until 25 or so.
I made about 11,000 last month. After taxes it came out to 6k and some change. Had to pay for the civic si engine overhaul $3k. This month I made 1600, which sucks. Ive made about 19k since May. I still do not feel comfortable buying a s2k. In the real world it is easy to have 1000 in credit card debt each month. I pay my bills on my card to give me points which = best buy gift cards. So I may make 40k my first year out of school or hopefully more depending on market conditions. But I still dont feel comfortable buying a s2k yet. I am single and rent is 525 a month (I have a room mate rent and bills is actually close to 1100 and my room mate is leaving in jan).
The s2k is also a depreciating asset. It will not make you money. It is a toy and believe me I want it. Additionally you are still in school. I have had my 2000 si for 3+ years now and I had it while going to school. Everyday I would park far as hell away from my classes to avoid new DINGS. Let me tell you more times then not i found a new ding when coming back from class. While my si is not a s2k it upset me beyond belief. If I had an S2k and it was dented i would prolly cry everyday. I drove my paps mazdaspeed miata to school and some idiot hit the passenger side rear fender. Life sucked! That car had the best factory red mica paint I had ever scene and boom. Do not own a nice car if you plan on parking it at school. YOU WILL GET DENTS. PEOPLE WILL BE JEALOUS SO SOME OF THOSE DENTS COULD BE INTENTIONAL.

20 here, live in on my own, 15 and hour at my job at 40+ a week.
car payment=465
insurance=140
second car=83
even after rent, utilities, and other payments i have, i still have money for food and for gas...its all in how you manage your money, if your good at managing your money then go for it...but if you have to second guess it...i would say no...but it is way worth it, the S2K is an amazing machine and both AP1/AP2 have there good and bad sides to them, so do some megga research before you jump into something you dont think you can afford...good luck to you my friend!

im glad i found this thread. im in the exact same situation right now. im 21 years old making close to 3 grand a month.. do u guys think i would struggle if i buy a used 02 s2k i found for 16,000? i am carless right now and have about 8k saved in my bank. im thinking of having my brother co sign it for me.
S2K's are decent street cars ( I had a spa yellow stock 03), but if you aren't ever going to see track time don't waste your $$.....go with a GSR or a swapped hatch if want a good street car ....I have a built GSR swap in my 94 hatch, and its way more fun and cost me about $12k less

Wow, now I know why they say America doesn't save. I figured most of you in this forum would be mid 20s, graduated college, etc. Hopefully some of you guys will realize that a car is a depreciating good, and that you're throwing your money away when you dump so much of your earnings into it. (of course this doesn't apply to those who have finished college and have real jobs).

But in all seriosness (spelling), im 21 have a mortgage of about $1000 loans totaling $550, insurance of $250 credit cards and cell phone.. im set to make about 35K this year. about 2G's in the bank. Also in Sales (car sales which sucks) which goes up and down. i should make 70 next year.. i dont have student loans and i do have 3 cars, so im not stuck driving my S everyday.. but i do plan on little things for the car. no its not paid off but i should be by this time next year. i bought it last month.. I say if you good with money and can add up Bills (Bills only), and still have $500 left over a month for food, going out, going out Drinking, and other fun things then do it.. but if you cant, being car poor sucks.. now dont know if i confused u or helped..
But on another note.. 2 days a week aint giong to cut it, or 11 an hour...maybe you shouldnt.. Good Luck with your decision
