my s2000 acceleration problems. . . plz help!
Ok, so I have owned my S for almost 3 weeks now. Firstly, I do not do digs, or rip first gear, but I have noticed over the last week or so of normal driving that my car does not get as much power in the lower gears mainly...for example, in 1st I could get to 40, now more like 30...it seems to rev longer and not really accelerate....im asking if you guys know whats up cuz honestly you guys are smarter (with specific s2000 knowledge) than anyone that I can take my car to. The car does run fine...at first i kinda thought that the car needed to breathe, I checked the air filter, which was horribly nasty...so i installed my k&n drop in today, but am still noticing the problem. kinda lost here..dont have the extra money right now to take it to a mechanic, and as I said, I just bought this car recently. 2000, with 78,xxx....thanks for any help guys.
sry guys, i have posted this on a forum im more involved with, but i am not sure if this is a similar problem a member here has encountered

this is pretty much what the other forum came up with, and it has a few of the symptoms, but not all of them..i.e. my car will respond when in a higher gear with low rpm. i just want to make sure there is not a problem such as compression...argghh...but i dont have money right now, since i just recently footed a down payment for the car, to go get a compression check

Regardless of how much power the car makes, it will always go the same speed in each gear at a given RPM. Example: if 5k RPM in a car in 1st gear is 20mph and the car has 20,000hp...the same car will still be at 5k RPM in 1st gear with 12hp.
That is only valid if the engine is engaging the trans gears properly. You might have a slipping clutch since that's really the only "slippable" link between an engine and manual trans.
Problem now is that a clutch job can be VERY VERY VERY expensive. The clutches themselves are expensive. The job of dropping the trans is unfortunately very difficult due to the placement of the engine/trans in the chassis (low and far back).
If you have a lift, it's not so bad. I don't. My friend's lifts at their houses were both taken up by other cars. So I found a shop around here willing to do mine for $300 for labor (I know the shop owner well). Other places quoted as high as $800 just for labor.
I did mine at 27k miles in order for the car to respond better at the track. I bought a hyper single at a BARGAIN for $900 (retail is like $1400, I think), the throw out bearing was $100ish. Labor was $300ish. $1300 total....and my stock clutch was just fine :sigh: I'm an idiot.
Anyway...expect to spend some money. Sorry man.

OP try this... instead of beating on it in every gear, gradually accelerate in second gear until 6-7K or so and punch it... if you dont go anywhere and the revs are flying, then its def your clutch...
thanks for your replies, i deffinately dont beat this car, as it is my DD, but i actually prefer it to be the clutch than the motor/compression....which was where i was so focused on i didnt even think about the clutch..but ill have to see after doing some clutch tests about taking it to cottman
Most of us n/a guys have the same problem...lack of torque.
All joking aside it sounds like the clutch. Do a couple hard shifts and see if it slips going into the next gear, you don't have to rev to 9k either.
Also, since you start out in 1st so maybe that's why it feels longer. You have to wait longer to get into the power band then if you are shifting into or right outside the power band. I know it feels like an eternity to 6k from a dead stop

another vote for clutch. If ur worried about compression, buy a $25 compression tool and test yourself. Could also be bad rocker arms causing you not to accelerate while in vtec. either way, sounds like its gonna cost ya.
i have the same problem once in a blue i floor it and it feels like a bog till 3k rpm in 1st gear and then goes fast but i think its the 90 degree weather and the lack of torque
