What is the POINT?
I am thinking of buying a GS-R or a VTEC Prelude, 94 or up. I am planning on putting performance parts on it. But Everything I find in my price range have 90K plus miles. I have come to ask myself if buying one of these cars and putting performance parts is worth it? I mean you spend let's say 9,000K getting the car and you add about 6,000K to 9,000K in perfomance parts. Then when the car gets top like 150,000K miles you got to get ride of it. And when you sell the danm thing you will not even cover the cost you put on the car. So you LOSED some serious money for what? Weekend cruising, Racing a few cars, Talk about how much **** you have on your car. I guess I am at the point where the glamour of this performance car **** has faded and the reality has come forth. The only way I think it is worth putting all that performance **** on your car is when you get it almost brand new. In my situation does anybody else agree with me??????
Please tell me what you think I am going CRAZY just thinking about it all the time

First of all, get the VTEC Lude.
Second, spend some money rebuilding the engine; or, when it goes, don't sell it! Instead, just swap a new motor in or rebuild the old one.

Man..... That's a pretty shitty outlook on things...don't you think? Why r u posting this here? It make's no sense... You see my friend, some of this do it for glory and status, but most of us will be doing this for the rest of our lives as a hobbie, it's a passion.
what do you do when you max out the life on the original motor? get another one! but maybe you're right this sport/hobby might not be for you. it sounds like you only want to do this stuff cause everyone else is doing it, not because you really want to.
it sounds like you havent even bought the car yet and already you are giving up!

Please don't buy a prelude. You sound like one of the guys that goes to the performance shop, drops $4k on a turbo set up and then won't pay another $200 to get it tuned. I predict that you'll sell whatever import you may end up buying in order to get a base model BMW, so you can impress some bleach headed, **** sucking bimbo. I may cuss, punch garage walls, and smoke like a damn fiend when I'm working on my car and everything doesn't go right, but when I put down 220whp with minimal tuning I was the happiest son of a bitch in the world. Don't start building an import, especially a daily driver, unless you love working on cars and riding your Huffy to work.
I had to walk home at 11 PM from work tonight because my car is on jackstands while I swap some H&R race springs in for my stockers. I didn't mind one bit. I even had a smile on my face b/c I knew I'd get to do a bit of work on my car. Next week I'll be dropping another $100 on dyno time and a nitrous fill, b/c my last runs were crap due to shitty nitrous. I get to convert a dry nitrous kit to a wet kit, tap some intercooler piping for a fogger nozzle, tune the nitrous on a boosted LS, help a friend drop in an H23A into an accord, and finish up my suspension all before the 13th. Keep in mind this is while I'm working 40+ hours a week. This is what serious enthusiasts do. If it doesn't sound like your particular brand of vodka, I'm sure you could find a 94 330i for under $10k.

well, it all depends on your point of view. if you think all that money will be worth the fun and other stuff that would come with a fixed up car then go for it. most of us "hardcore enthusiasts" don't give a rats *** if we lose money later on because we love the hobby and we love cars. i never even think about that. i just want to get my baby lookin better and going faster. the rest is not important to me even if i spent my last penny on it and went to bed with no dinner. you gotta be an enthusiast first. if you're doing it just to be "cool" or because all your friends are doing it FORGET IT. do it ONLY if you really think this is something you will enjoy and be proud of. otherwise, a 318 is perfect for you. just my $.2

Back to topic...
I kinda agree to what the original poster said. Spend all that $$$ on a used, high mileage car and dump it later for another used, high mileage car a few years down the road. I agree to his point that mods should be done with a new car. Example: My friend's WRX. An up-pipe, aftermarket muffler and a piggy-back chip and he gets around 225 HP at the wheels. How many miles he had on his car? Less than 10,000 miles, and he took delivery in May, 2001.
Seriously. If I'd look for a used car, I wouldn't drop a penny's worth of mods on it. However, if it's a new performance car... It's an entirely different story.
it all depends on your perspective man. Thats all YOUR opinion. Im sure you know the opinion of anyone that would be posting on this site. I on the other hand DO get money off of it. I can build a car, spend a crap load less since I sell parts, and use the costs as a tax write off at the end of the fiscal year!
... I'm sure you could find a 94 330i for under $10k. There weren't 330i back in 94. The most you'd find would be a 325i. 328i came out around 96.

oh , cmon guys... he has a point that a lot of people come up with.
Let me be very blunt about this: if you modify your car, a little, or STUPID amounts, you will never get your money out of it. That's the way it goes.
Most people who WANT to modify a car WANT higher mileage cause it won't cost them as much in the long run. For low miles, you pay to have "newer" stuff... why pay for newer stuff you're just going to replace any damn way?
Get an older car, (Prelude, duh) modify the hell out of it, and enjoy it while you have it.

whats the point? if you have to ask then don't spend your money on it. To me putting money into my car isn't an INVESTMENT into the car, its an investment into a hobby.....

Hey man you have to love this game once you start puting money into a car new or old.Look at it this way alot of people get older car's and put a lot of $$$$$ into it cause it cost less in the long run,it doesnt mater wether its a new car that cost 25,000 or a old car that cost 10,000 once you start puting money into it its gone you will never get that money back or even come close to it.

well, you're not gonna lose anything if you know what you're doing.
i bought a 95 civic hatch for $800 in horrible condition, invested $1800 in it to fix it and paint it. sold it for $5800. thats a $3200 profit. now i can paint my prelude and buy some other stuff with that same money. no loss whatsoever. i can easily sell my wheels for more than i bought them for. you see, when you buy good stuff it pays off. if you buy cheap **** (tenzo, apc, etc) you'll lose because nobody wants it.
but i said it before and i'll say it again, it's all about love. if you love the hobby, you'll spend money. if you don't, then you shouldn't even be a member of this board. simple as that.
some people spend money on booze, some on drugs, some on hookers, some on collecting antiques, some on other sports, and some on cars. i'd rather spend my money on the car than drugs or hookers. it's a hobby and more than that. if you ask me, every penny i spent on my car was worth it so far and i never regret spending on my car. if you do, then log yourself out and never come back.
