VIN NUMBERS!!!!!!!
I am going to post this on all forums.
The other day my stupid neighbor parked his race car outside on the street(public) and covered it with a car cover.
Well, that same week it got towed and a vehicle theft recovery team agent came by the my house asked me if I knew anything about this vehicle. I said "yeah it's the guy up street who own's it". He replied "that vehicle has no VIN numbers and no plates". I said "yeah, of course it doesn't have any plates cause it's a race car!?" He said that it's a felony if you remove or deface any vin numbers and this vehicle didn't have any dashboard where the vin should have been at. I told him that the vin number on the firewall and on the door jam is still in tact it should be fine. He said "No, removing a dash with a vin number is a felony". I'm like WTF is this idiot thinking! I told him that a bunch of my racer friends remove their dashboards as well as my own race car! He's said "Just better make sure that I don't catch them!" On the same note this whole conversation was occuring in my garage with my friends Integra being gutted out for full race. He looked inside my friends car and said "I could arrest you for removing your dash". In my mind I felt like kicking him in his throat for being so stupid! I told him "don't worry I have the dash in the back of my friends Suburban(we were just about to take it to the junk yard).
Please tell me that this Officer is full of it cause that's what my SF cop friend said. By the way this was DALY CITY cop too as well.

I've heard you can get a ticket for that. A friend of mine said his brothers car has his vin number held on with screws though and the cop was ******* with him about that saying how its a felony and he could go to jail for it. You know how it has those little metal disc things holding it on, cause the cop said it should have those. Its true, you do have to have the VIN Number up on your dash.
I think this is B U L L S H I T !
If it is not on a public highway I cannot see any way you would get arrested. Parked on the street YES...in your garage or at the track no. My logic here is that a custom bulit car will not have a VIN. If you build a sandrail to go off in the desert you don't get a VIN assigned. I have a hard time believing a Top Fuel dragster or a NASCAR car have VINs. Maybe I'm way off but come on....

interesting story..
well.. i had my VIN removed off my dash also.. i've been "told" it was illegal. but not quite sure how legit that is.
Hence.. i carry a piece of paper from the Honda Dealership in the car stateing my VIN number. (not sure how much this'll help.. but better than nothing)
o ya.. i dont have VIN on my door jams either. only on fire wall.
so worst comes to worst.. pop engine.. show VIN on firewall. *shrug*
any opinions?

what up A.K i have been harrassed many times about the vin. it is illegal to remove any vin and it is a phelony to remove a vin if the car is registerd in the state of cali but they have never made a big deal about it, i've delt with this like 5-6 times everytime i get pulled over. (no dash on my street accord) it is not illegal to remove the dash but the vin, yes. it's funny they harrass me for the dash but ussally don't think about the vin..... ussally there has to be a vin visable from the outside of the car. and if u remove your dash u have to have it put on by someone certified to do so
this is deffinatly BULLSHIT, but look at there point of view, nah ****'em

just being a pig to a "punk kid" I am sure. But it is somewhat true... like these guys said, if it is not on the street, you should be OK. However, if you ever get it in a wreck, or want the title rebuilt, if the vin is altered, you go through a lot of ****.
