We own a 1991 lude and are currently getting it ready for ice racing, we have gone through 2 differentials already. First 1 exploded like a time bomb and second has a cracked housing around the differntial area, any idea what could be causing such damage to these differentials, we have solid motor mount in the front and spaced the axles in 1/4" because of previous problems. Thanks for any info

I don't have experience racing on ice but I would guess those tranny's might have already been on their lasts legs before you used them. I would think you would want a LSD for that motorsport but maybe I'm wrong like I said haven't raced on the ice
by "solid motor mounts" do you mean they are sturdy and securely mounted or do you mean they are solid steel so they cannot flex? if your motor mounts are solid steel then that alone is putting unnecessary excessive stress on your drive train. and what do you mean you spaced the axles in 1/4 inch? i dont understand what that means.

We put large washers in between the rotor and the axle so the axle is a 1/4" closer to the transmission. The front motor mount is welded so to try and eliminate torque steer.
well i dont know anything about ice racing, bt i still dont see how spacing the axles close to the transmission would help anything. because although your moving the axle closer to the transmission, the inner cv joint is a slip joint so your really not gaining anything by doing that. if you spaced them too far you could damage the transmission if you were to hit a large bump because of the decreased distance between the knuckly and tranny. secondly, torque steer is a result of having a half-shaft on the right side of the tranny. your right axle is twice as long as your left axle, therefore there is more flex on the right side, making it accelerate slower and torque the car to the right. it doesnt have anything to do with your motor mounts. if i were you i would put the shock dampening motor mounts back in. i'd have to guess that is why your tranny housing is cracking. torque steer cannot be eliminated.
