Default Sport Shift....

Just wanted to find out why or what is up w the negativity for the auto stick trans?
I had to go with one due to nerve damage in my lower back and can't use clutch anymore.Bought a 01 at 22k,now have 29k and want to know what you guys know about possible problems with SS trans so I may get it fixed or modified while still under warranty. All help appreciated!!

LOVE my LUDE!!! It's still a blast to drive.

they are slow, and are weak. by weak i mean, when you put a lot of power in your car (turbo) it wont hold up.

are you just talking about the fact that it's automatic? you lose a lot of power across the torque converter for one, and lose the driving experience of a 5 speed..
being that you aren't in a situation of being able to use a clutch, an SS prelude is STILL a prelude! so its all good ya know?
you can still super charge the thing and get some good power to the wheels..(but it wont last long with that tranny)

from a factory standpoint and the 'under warranty' clause you included, there isnt a callback on the tranny that i know of..but people seem to have trouble with it malfunctioning.. might want to have the dealer check yours out to see if its prone to failure.

anyway- a lude is a lude, its on your shoulders how happy you are with it.

Well the ss's are slower...I wish i had a standard. But a lude is a lude right??

btw, this is off topic, but how much does anyone think it'll cost to get a transmission swap?? Parts and labor??

Your case is a special one, and some peeps do go ahead and get the SS if they are in traffic a lot, or if they think their wife/gf will drive it and grind the clutch/gears in a manual down into piles of fine metal shavings, so...
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Just wanted to find out why or what is up w the negativity for the auto stick trans?</TD></TR></TABLE>
Well, where do I start?!? By most timeslips I've seen it's MORE THAN a full second slower than a manual in the 1/4, it only has 4 speeds, 1st and 4th gears are basically useless mostly because you can't clutch-dump in 1st to help your launch & in 4th gear you'll die of old age before you hit VTEC because no matter how late you shift the shift from 3rd-to-4th drops the rpms down below 3 grand, it loses an incredible amount of power through the inefficient tranny (if a base 5 spd is losing @+-18%, imagine what the SS is leaking away), etc, etc.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by NatakuBlitz &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">from a factory standpoint and the 'under warranty' clause you included, there isnt a callback on the tranny that i know of..but people seem to have trouble with it malfunctioning.. might want to have the dealer check yours out to see if its prone to failure.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Honda should have sent out a notification that they extended the warranty on the SS tranny to 100,000 miles because it IS MOST DEFINITELY prone to failure. Log onto PO.com, thay have a whole thread on it. The TSB will include examples of symptoms of traits that a failing tranny will exhibit.

But like dude said, a Lude is a Lude. It's still sweet, so research what you can do to it and enjoy it.

u all might find this interesting , i have a 97 ss lude the first year they were made, it has 109 thousand miles on it, i just boosted it about 1000 miles ago , and knock on wood, not a single cough yet, i also would like a 5spd tranny , and i am going to do a swap and it does not cost 4 to 5 g's you can do it for a bout 800 bucks , if you get a tranny from any f or h series motor, the ecu is the most expensive part , just though you might find this interesting

Damn, I didn't know that MacGyver was a member here... So, tell me how I can make a standalone out of a calculator, 3 paper clips, some Lincoln logs, a pocket watch and an Etch-A-Sketch. $800 my bee-hind, try $3,800.

Seriously though, he said that he HAS to drive the SS stupid, so why the hell would/could he do a tranny swap?!?

okk ******* make jokes all you want, but my buddy has a 99 prelude auto that is converted and he did it all for 1278 , that is with an h22 tranny you can use an f22 tranny and u can find those in a junkyard for 200 bucks, ecu is the most expensive thing , or u can do a stand alone , i would like to see the figures on parts for 4 to 5 g's whoever is doing your ****** swaps is making out like a bandit while your bent over the counter!!!

First, as you can see I took the time to make your prior post legible to Homo Sapiens. Next, it's not the parts that are necessarily going cost you the whole $3k+ junior, it's the labor if you NOT going to do it yourself, why I don't know any shadetree mechanics/laymen who would tackle that one; I think I'd rather swap an engine than a tranny myself. Next, I've never seen an ecu that cost more than a transmission, and DUH! the standalone by itself would cost you more than $800 dude.

So your buddy must be that guy from the A-Team...

There are several people on po.com that have done the swap themselves that are not mechanics. When the time comes to swap mine, I will be doing it myself. Most of the parts are direct bolt ons. There are only some minor modifications that need to be done, such as drilling holes in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder. The parts needed can be had for ~$1500 if one shops around.

Why does this board always have to be a flame fest???

I really don't spend any time on PO.com so that's news to me. You should create a topic and post some of that info here, because there are many, many people who would be SOOOO very happy to hear that.

My excuse is that I'm stuck at work until 5 am, whiny employees are getting on my nerves, I have Excedrin headache #368 and I'm bored. I don't know about anyone else...

It's all in jest Shark, for the most part anyway. Cynical sarcasm? There's plenty of that, but sincere serious animosity isn't as common as you think.

http://www.preludeonline.com Sorry, I should have been more specific...PO.com is what we say for short. There's a membership fee, but it's nominal and definitely worth the price.
