i have kind of the same problem.

Sometimes the stick on the MPH gauge flickers and sometimes it even dies, then after a while it will come back to normal. One time it didnt work for a couple days.

is this the speed sensor as well?

check and see if you have any moisture inside the connector that goes to the speed sensor

for the one with the flickering guages, thats an electric problem with the guages.....if you can see the needle, and its still at the right speed, then your VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is fine.....

for you whose wont work when the engine is hot......make sure the wires arent corroded, and check for wetness like ^^ said......

if neither work, you may need a new VSS.....
