so that anyone can just jump into your car, push the button and drive off?

Thats what it sounds like to me. once they get the door open itl be their car. I'm pretty sure the altima's key transmits a signal that the car recognizes and allows the door buttons to be pressed to unlock the car and the start button to work. good luck trying to rig that up.
new altima has a self aware alarm. when u get close to the car the doors unlock if u walk to the trunk it pops automatically. u get in car and push button and start it. my buddy jus got an 07 :-)
Yes, anyone with a brain, some good wiring knowledge, and a helms manual could do that.
You seem to obviously be lacking in the first category though, I'm gonna come to philly, smash your window, and get a free prelude for it. PM me if you need help installing the button (I'm just kidding don't pm me, I'm not gonna steal your car)

The new Lexus IS series has this. As long as the key is within a certain range, everything works find:doors unlock, trunk pops and car starts without using the key.
The S2000 has this same thing...except you have to use the key which defeats the purpose of a push start. It's been done but requires a **** load of wiring...good luck.

No need to be so fancy. The Camry and Avalon have it as options. Yes, it's a self aware setup that knows when the fob is close to the ignition (range is like 10 feet). You could make a two button setup. One for power and the other to start, but you can't just make it one button with no key without a self aware setup. There are some other options though. Used car lots use boxes on your steering colum where you enter a code to start the car. If you don't make payments, they can come by and change the code remotely (also about 10 feet away) and you can't start your car because you don't know the code. Perhaps you could work from there

That doesn't defeat the "purpose" of push button start, lol what is the "purpose" of it anyways?
I think its a waste of wiring/money and a good way to lose your keys while you're in the car. Every time I get out, my keys are in the igniton, done, thats how I like it.
