rust repair
i just bought a 94 prelude and it needs some rust repair work. some of it i know what to do, some of it is new to me (i'm a hobbyist, not a pro). i know that to the rust around the windshield, i'll need to take it out. but i'm not sure how exactly to attack. plus, i have a nasty fender, that will need metal welded into. can someone recommend a good book or video. i really rather a nice step-by-step guide instead of trying to read it off the net. anyone know of anything.
you'll probably need to remove your windshield moulding to fix the rust there and cut the rust out on your fenders, then weld in new metal. get it done professionaly.
i bought the car with the point of DOING body repair. i'm not interested in the car beyond something to save miles on my truck and to practice a new skill.
who said **** about using filler?

i cant reccomend a book personaly but i'm sure your local library and even parts store would have something. i can say thatbody work can be done without a lot of experience but it will take a lot of time and patince. i would highly reccomend you replace the rusted out shhemetal instead of body filler, and the best way is to get stock replacement parts. get replacement pannels and cut them to match the sections you removed due to rust, sometimes its best to stay with a smal patch sometimes it works bettye to go bigger to get to a place that will blend better. your gonna have to be very good at welding to do this because sheetmetal will warp or butn though if you get it to hot, you have to move slowly tacing a couple inches apart so you dont put too much heat in the same spot, one you do this though you will need a little bit of bondo to smooth things out bt not much. snad it down to get the shape you want and prep it and paint it. the windshield area will probably be easyier to get to match smoothly since its rather hidden ut the fenders will be hard and there curves will take time to get smooth. good luck
Yeah there is no better learning experience than hands on experience. A book can never actually show you the best way to do it. Its something that you have to figure out on your own.
To get rid of rust, you will have cut out about an inch or so past where the rust is. Then you would have to weld on the new sheet metal. To much work for what it is. Buy new fenders they dont run that much.
You can sand off the rust past the the rust into the metal. Paint the area with rusteolem. That would ward it off a good ammount of time.

Wow, that's lame.
Why are you not in the paint/body forum instead of the Prelude forum?
Some basic advice for you is use POR-15 anytime you remove or sand rust. Rust-oleum is garbage compared to it. Remove all heavy rust that you can and cover any surface rust or exposed metal with a couple thin coats of POR-15.
If you're not good at welding/grinding, then just go ahead and get a new fender. They're not too expensive.
