Default Making Your own header.

Question goin out there to the custom header makers out there.. How hard is it to really make your own header that performs well... is it all just make one and test it on the dyno, or is it more about just making sure all the runners are equal length.

But I really doubt SMSP or RMF are going to reveal their info.

yea but figure, a flange is about 40 bucks, and piping no more than 50. so figure at most its gonna cost you only 125 to in materials, i can do it all during my class time at school anyway. I just wanna know if there really is alot more to it than what it seems.

well if you can weld well, try it. buy one of those custom headers and reverse engineer it and steal their design. its cheating, but it works.

hey NASA could you just tell me the results of 50 + years of engineering...because the actual materials for a rocket aren't that expensive really...

You would probably want to read a book an fluid dynamics first.

he never asked for RMF or SMSP to get on here and release their information. I am the one that said that.

But I mean, Really if you actually think about what he is saying...He has a point. If you can weld good and can understand the concept of what exactly a header does then making one would be a lot better than purchasing one. I too would like to know what all it would take for a header, but I really didnt want to ask because I knew answers like all these would come up.

If you really want something cheap just get a DC knockoff from Ebay for $125. It'll probably perform as good or better than something you'd make in your garage with no testing and no engineering into it.

Yea i was plannin on gettin some jack asses to tell me that im asking RMF and SMSP to give away all their secerets and such, im just wondering how hard it is to actually physically make one, and I was gonna dyno it and see if it actually makes power.

if you know how to weld it shouldnt be a problem. the big name guys seem to get their pre-bent tubing from burns stainless and cut the sections to fit how they want. they sell the collectors also.

but designing a header is another story. its just like picking an appropriate cam for what you are trying to do.

i already have a cheap header... i wanted to build my own and see if it would perform better, and cost less than half that of a RMF

Runners #1 and #4 turn down wayyyy too soon for my tastes. But hey, at least it looks shiny!
