i have a stock 5th gen prelude and am wondering if it would be ok to change when my vtec pop to 4500rpms? would that be a bad thing on a stock motor some one told me it would be pointless. i just dont understand how becouse i would be making that power that much sooner...if any one could please explain this to me please iam new to the honda world so i dont really understand it to well thank you

your vtec engagement point should be where you can't even feel the changeover to vtec. are all preludes the same and need to be at stock engagement? absolutely not. i can promise you that yours probably doesn't need to be at 4500. get on a dyno. that will tell you for sure. whereever you see your torque curve start to drop is where you engage your vtec.

now, if you're just wanting to feel the vtec HIT, you should go higher. your car is going to be slower, but you will get the vtec kick.

bottom line: the more kick you feel with the vtec, the slower your car is. you want a smooth gain of horsepower across your rpms.

1G is absolutely right. I assume you already have a VTEC controller, so changing it to the right point should be very easy. If you don't have one yet i have one for sale if you're interested.

no i dont have one when iam at the point where i got all my bolt on's on. then iam ganna get it tuned and when i do that. i was ganna have them change the vtec to pop at 4500 so i can get to the power faster and stay in it longer. but i guess thats not the proper way how much is you selling it for

when you get it tuned, they'll know(hopefully) where the correct point is. if they tune it and you feel the punch of vtec, take it back, and make them tune it again for free

i had a misconception about the engagement point for a long time. i used to argue with my friend until he set my vtec where it should be with a smooth transition. my 1/4 miles times dropped. it didn't feel faster by the butt dyno, but the real dyno showed great torque gains across my mid rpm range.
