Default Engine Knock/Deisel Noise

hey all,

i did a search on this and all i found was that 3rd gens(i have a 91 si) have a notoriously noisy valve train. but when my car is idling, it kinda sounds like a diesel motor....but on a smaller scale. even when i am driving, i can hear the "diesel type knocking noise". the car idles PERFECT and is really peppy...but is this knock i hear just the valve train? i've tried to really listen to the noise, and it only seems to be coming from one side of the engine. i'm going to do a vavle adjustment in the next couple days and see if that cures it...but i'm kinda nervous about this noise. i just bought the car from an older lady that was the original owner, so i'm sure it wasn't beaten. btw, it's the 2.1 leter engine...and has 144k miles on it(burns a quart every 3k).

can somebody explain the "notoriously noisy valve train" a little deeper please....and can it be mistaken for a knock? thanks so much. kevin
