Default car sputtering??.....

So.... When I first start my car (even when it warms up) and first start driving there is a big hesitation in first. like i can put the pedal to the floor and it wont rev higher, then after like 2-3 seconds it'll jump forward. Also, recently (past 3 days) when i am cruising through town at like 45mph and on the gas slightly just to keep speed, the car feels like it is sputtering, but if i get on it it goes away. Also, sometimes if i blip the throttle when it hasnt been run yet the revs wont go up, like the throttle response is REAL shitty. Do you think my fuel pump is going or my injectors are clogged. Should i disconect the battery and see if the computer kinda "resets itself"? please help. TIA

Welcome to the great world of the Prelude hesitation. Be sure to let me know if you find out what is causing it. I've had it for over 10 months.

I'd say try the little things first, i just started having this problem after i rebuild my H22. Didn't have the problem up until i rebuild it and put about 1300 miles on it. only think i can think do is run some injectors cleaner and buy some intake clearer and go to town.

But if you figure it out please let all of know.

ok I just had to deal with this exact problem, heres what I did:

1.new sparkplugs (checked wires---looked fine)
2.new distributer cap (checked rotor---looked fine)

drove car around for a little while, helped a little but the problem was still there (mainly the hesitation)

3.new fuel filter (very dirty)
4.used some stp throttle body cleaner

drove car around some more, helped even more but still had a little hesitation

5.dropped a bunch of chevron fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank

after a couple tanks of gas were gone through the problem has gone away

one last thing-check your compression, if your compression is really low because of the rings being worn out you, will experience the hesitation and so forth especially at low rpm's.

Hymmm, so you are saying it was your injectors or something in the fuel supply system since the cleaner made it go away?

i was figurin it had something to do with the injectors, cause thats what it seems like. I just had my engine replaced brand new from Honda 8 k miles ago, so i doubt its the rings....but ill check. i am bettin that the dealership didnt change any of the fuel system components thats why i was figuring thats what it was.... I try your opinion and see how it goes.

4bidden....how is it going with the short shifters?

You asked so I guess I don't mind going OT in your post....

I finally got a 5gen stock shifter and...well...uhm....it's not made to come apart. I am going to have to sell the complete shifter/base plate portion as a unit. It will be direct bolt in, just replace the whole stock piece. The huge white plastic part on the stock shifter does not come off.

Hey, I have the same exact problem....i doubt its my compression i only have 33K on the motor and i dont abuse it

just ordered some plugs and wires see if that works but i also got a code 71 which is misfire cylinder 1 so that can be directly related to my ignition...ill try the fule cleaner too

I guess that might explain why companies are only putting out adaptors for them instead of true short shifters..... Good luck if you still are going through with it
Ok this is OT too, but I can't get my shift **** off.....like Im not that dumb (i dont think) But when i turn the shift **** the whole boot turns too, i looked for a locking nut or something to squeeze but to no avail

MugenPoweredLude: What wires did you get. I should probably try to change mine too.
Has anyone had a problem with this hessitation on the drag strip?

The hesitation made me go from 14.3@98 to 14.6@94. So yea, it DOES hamper your low and top end, even though it feels like it goes away top end.

Stick a flathead between the boot and the chrome ring and pry downwards while pullling down on the boot.

if i pull the injectors, is there any easy way to clean them out??...that fuel additive injector cleaner never works..it's just like running a little bit of HIgh Octane fuel...

My car has done the same for a LONG time. I get a motor w/ 100k dropped in, and it did it when i first got it in. It kept sputtering for a long time, then eventually kinda went away. Recently, it's done it the past few days. I used to notice that it would do it when the car had sat in cold weather over night, or if it was rainy.

A buddy of mine, ALTERED4 here on the board, had some NGK wires laying around that I put on and the car feels pretty good. No noticable hesitation yet. But its known to come/go as it pleases. Only real way to tell is to take it to the track.

Yep, I took my buddy for a ride and he was like "Man, I don't feel any hesitation". It felt alright to me also. And I went out last night and did some aggressive driving and the car felt really good. Accelerated smoothly and the idle seemed better. Maybe I'll take it to the track this week and see if she's her old self again.

Just get some stock wires if you have a hookup at Honda...same thing, except black.

are there better wires to get, or does the prelude not like aftermarket wires? i know some cars act funny like that sometimes.
