block heater
do the 2001 se preludes have block heaters from factory or is it an option? its like -35 here in wpg and my car sounds like its hurting when i start it, and if it does not should i be goin out 2 start it every 1- 2 hours 2 prevent any damadge?
You know that is a good question
. I know they are not factory, but I am not sure if they are an option I will check when I go back to work. I have only done like 3 and they were all on the Oddessy

Have a look here are some decent aftermarket gizmo's especially the oil pan heater.

Fair enough I must admit I have no experience of these gadgets, as the temp in Scotland rarely goes below -10 do you think that's low enough for me to benefit from fitting some kind of heater /circulator ?
It will not hurt though... We have harder winters in Poland so I'm thinking about that device, but I don't know how to change the voltage of it (US is 110V, here 230V).

Then obviously that wouldn't be a good idea. It's also a bad idea to use a blowdryer while taking a shower, although either one by itself works just fine.

No, actually I didn't know it did it until I noticed it browsing through the manual. Since I'm in California, it's not much of a worry for me. It's obviously not the best choice for places with long, really cold winters, but it's perfect for an occasional cold night. It starts and runs the car for a few minutes every 2 hours to keep it warm. Beats the hell out of a cracked block.
Not sure exactly what type of heater you guys are discussing here, but a friend that lives in a really cold area has a device that is installed somewhere in the cooling circuit that heats and circulates the water when plugged in. Is that what is considered a block heater?

I don't use it at all as it's never cold enough here to worry about. I mentioned it because the original poster was talking about going outside every couple of hours to start the car, and if that was his plan then it would certainly be easier to let the car start itself while he sleeps.
I don't have any experience with this, as it's 70 degrees here during the day right now. Thanks for the explanation.

Unless he's parking on the side of a skyscraper, the parking brake will do just fine.

Anyone capable of changing their own oil should be able to install one of these themself.

No it's not a thumb down.
Do you understand the concept of hand brake slides? You yank on the handbrake and the rear wheels lock up.
If you're parked and you have your hand brake up, your car isn't going to move unless you haven't been performing maintenance on your car and the brakes are totally worn out.

well as far as the parking brake thing goes......you can adjust it very easily if yours is loose, good brakes or not.....
and the block warmer is a good idea for anyone, there is no downside to having it....
it would be nice even here in NC, it rarely gets below 15F here but my car still sounds like death in the really cold mornings, im gonna look into one of those.....

Honda does offer them as optional equipment, i dont know if you can still get one for a Prelude, but i do know for a fact they were offered. just looked up the install directions at work the other day just for kicks and giggles

Not sure about your area but up here most Honda dealers stock them. They are not specific to a Prelude really, I think most hondas would use the same one. There are many aftermarket one's available too for a few dollars less. </TD></TR></TABLE>
there are different ones b/c of the way they thread in, but yes, most likely they are interchangeable. i've never installed in myself, so i dont know for sure

I'm wondering from that site - what the difference is between
112605 HEATER, ENGINE
and
34121 HEATER, ENGINE BLOCK
they are both the same price - but the part numbers are different so i'm wondering what the diff is.
what other type of heater is their besides the block heater? heh, when I lived up in yellowknife we used to have battery blankets too! - that was the suck.

We've been at well below freezing temps here for a while now, so I'm def doing this. My only question concern is that the engine block heater is only listed for the Base and not the SH. Can anyone tell me why? From what I understand all this things does is plug into the block drain hole.
