Default Block choices

I'm starting a build and can't use the engine in my car since it's the only engine i got. lol so i need to buy a block to start building. Which should I choose? H22a1, h22a4, h22a4 from an sh, h22a from japan, h23a vtec, h23 non vtec? It will be bored, sleeved, etc. I'm going n/a for right now and turbo in 2-3 years. I'm letting my builder do everything but with the holidays I can't get ahold of him right now. Thanks for the help everyone.

The h22a1 is closed deck which would be better for boosting not sure if the h23 vtec is, but either way I would suggest a closed deck block for a turbo build.

Yes the SH block has a different transmission bolt pattern so unless you're using an ATTS trans, just use a normal H22 block

Or the f20b it's not bad i experienced it for three years that motor is the best imo. Had it in a 92 prelude at 9k revs and put it on a 92 civic sedan 2 years later same thing beating it and it took the abuse. Its a tough block and you can bore it out if the power does not satisfy you (88mm stroke). Just saying i like h22's too but what block you know doesn't have oil squirters and revs to 9k constantly.

For reference, the thread below is linked in the Prelude FAQ's stickie at the top. It has all the information you could want and more!

If you are going to do a 2.3l stroker, the 92-96 H22a1 have 50mm mains and you can drop the H23a1 crank in it. The H22a and H22a1 are closed deck. The 98+ H22a4 have 55mm mains and are open deck. The JDM H23a vtec also has 55mm mains and is open deck but does NOT have oil squirters which is a concern if you are going to auto-x or track days. The bastard of them all is the 97 H22a4 which only has 50mm mains and is open deck.

If staying 2.2l, I would go with the 98+ H22a4 with Darton or ERL sleeves. I have also heard great things about Golden Eagle, but I am just starting my research.

Keep us posted with your build,
Brian.

stay away from h23's, the cast crank runs the risk of breaking and destroying your entire engine. as for the other blocks, it all depends on what type of sleeves you plan to use. if you go with modular in deck sleeves, any of the blocks will work, but if you wanna save some cash, you could use the open deck blocks and use wet sleeves.

Never heard this before. Has this happened to you personally and what power level/conditions did the failure take place? I have been running a built h23 (320whp) with an oem h23 crank for 6+ years daily driven....

What are you talking about??

The only problem I have heard with a stroker setup is the risk of spinning bearings on the 50mm crank. Something about the weight of the crank, the torque and higher rpms [>8K] causes them to spin.

Regardless, when I get the H2B out of storage I'll be doing this myself with ITBs and type-s pistons.

Hey brian, Dont forget the 97mm accord crank too, that will give you a true 2.3 liters and up the compression a bit if you keep the same overall piston height. Im working on that setup (in an h22a4 with 55mm mains), the drawback is making the oil squirters work is nearly impossible. For my next motor Im looking at the 99mm k24 crank, custom rods and s2k forged pistons.
