AEM Pulleys -Impression and Mishaps
Impressions of AEM PS Pulley:
I installed my Power Steering AEM pulley and I must say the engine revs more freely. A nice mod, but for the gains it is pricey. I didn't have to use the bolt that came with the kit, the Honda one is better anyways because it has a locking head.
Mishap 1:
I am soooooo pised I didn't put a rag over the alternator, because I had some fluid spill on it. Does anybody know how bad this is? It seems fine.
Impression of No Power Steering:
I also drove w/o the PS connected and it feels amazing!!! So much feedback its like a true sports car but when it came time for a 3 point turn your fuked unless your Arnold. I wish I had a true speed sensitive power steering system, that is only sensitive when speeds are low.
Mishap 2:
Once I put everthing back together I realized I was low on PS fluid so I drove to Honda and when I would accelerate I would hear a whinning noise from the pump. There was fluid in the reservoir but it was well below the low mark. Once I filled the reservoir it went away THANK GOD. It seems fine, but did I do damage to the pump by running the reservoir low for a short trip?

mishap 1: ahh you should be alright
mishap 2: it should be ok .... its not like you drove it empty
personally i would of stayed w/o the powersteering pump belt..... to each his own though

Sounds good for the alternator, thats why I specifically did not install the alternator pulley. I heard people complain about their battery dying.

i took my power steering belt off today for the hell of it and I will never drive my 4g vtec without it again. You can't steer the car and if you need to turn the wheel quickly even while moving your screwed

If people complain of their battery dying with the AEM alt pulley they have other problems. I have a ~4yr old battery that has survived the Arizona summers and I use the AEM alt pulley for the past 2+ years.
I just want it slightly smaller so the battery will charge at a lower rpm and the lights will not dim at idle.

My o-ring on my PS pump blew and basically coated the Alternator. Other than smell funny it didn't do anything.

That's why I removed mine. After a month, your forearms and triceps get pretty buff and you barely even notice it. Only at a dead stop but now I can do it with one hand.

How do you find parking? I know high speed driving it feels amazing, you feel totally involved when your driving. It was worth spilling out fluid and my power steering is back to normal. I still wonder if the fluid lubricates the bearing or any other components.

Just wait, you'll end up were I did. 4-6 hours waiting in line to get back to the states from Canada. Didn't really think about the battery as the car was idling. Next thing I know she won't turn over. Thank god the whole Prelude club was there. Took us about 2.2seconds to get it going.
Satan- Keep us up to date on the pulleys. I'm sure yours will look nice, and I'm really starting to regret by big blue pulleys. little too show, not enough go.

Were you using the AEM pulleys? What was your solution? Was the battery in good condition? I've heard your story many times.
I've been told that the Unorthadox pulleys are the same size but lighter.
Is this true? I weighed the Honda PS pulley and it was close to 1lbs!

id like to know this also, i started a thread about it but didnt get any solid answers

To answer about 4ws, I think the answer is no.
Looking in the helms the 4WS is an electronic controlled unit independant from the front power steering assembly. It's a computer that reads the steering/wheel angle and speed sensors from the front and then rotates the back tires in accordance.
So, if the front wheels still turn, it should be ok. However, I don't know if the speed sensor will still send a signal .. but if it doesn't, then you'll get a 4WS light.
Trying this should be safe but the side effects possibly are unknown if its fully working. Give it a try.
ps - my 85 prelude had kickass handling on the highway over my 4gen w/o power steering. It sucks *** trying to turn, the 4ws will help u-turns but you DO get used to it right away ... satan you big popeye buff man .. mmm mm .. *drool*
