4th gens in the snow?
kinda a stupid question, but....how do 4th gen preludes do in the winter? I'm just wondering what i should expect.
|
expect heavy understeer; unless youre real gentle with the contorls.

Re: (OTT)
just do a 6 inch suspension lift and put some super swampers 33's on it, and you will be fine.
Seriousnly though, it is driving in the snow in a light car, you get what you expect, and please just dont be a dumbass, for your sake. I care a great doeal for you AK_94lude, i would not want to see your hurt https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif |
Last winter was the first time driving my lude in the snow, and I had no problems at all.

brings a whole new meaning to the username LudeLover lol jk

Re: (OTT)
I'm getting ready to face my first winter in my lude too. It can't be any worse than driving the civic in it
|
Re: (LudaMan)
it isn't to bad, and if you get some bad-ass winter tires like my hakkapaletas you'll be in good hands, until some soccer mom plows into the back of you in her fawkin ginorrmous suv...

I personal think the civic i had was a lot better in the snow then my lude was. Out where i live there are hills that i have to drive up every day. There was more then once that my lude decided to just start spinning with me not doing anything. Yet I NEVER had any issues like that with the civic. Maybe because I had wider tires on the lude then the civic, who knows. |
Re: (CHK4TIX)
Winter beater, that is the solution. You'll find driving in snow with the Prelude can and will be a learning experience. Low profile, wide tread tires just don't cut it. A civic with stock wheels is a breeze compared to the Prelude in snow.
|
yea the wider tires aren't as good in the winter time.. but i've driven my lude in some bad snow and it never acted up too much, just have to be easy. treat everything like it's ice is what i did.
|
Re: 4th gens in the snow? (AK_94LUDE)
Ice storms in WVA suck. Last year I totally couldn't stop on one downgrade, but whether another car would have done better I doubt. Basically, like any car in the snow, get the right tires on it and take it easy.
|
Yeah i used to have a 2000 Eclipse GT and that thing sucked in the snow. I sold it after one winter. It already snowed here once but not a lot and it did fine but i plan on taking my rims off and got some steels to put some winter tread on. we have a big problem with ice here not really snow. The roads are always slick in the winter, even though they don't look it.

Absolutely right! Empty headed soccer moms need to learn that while their SUV may have 4WD it does not have any more wheels braking than the other cars on the road. Drove my third gen in the ice storm 2 years ago. It was fine even on high crowned roads where I had to drive at a 45 degree angle to the direction of travel because the rear wheels slid down hill. |

ahh thats love right there you guys should get married or somthing |
Re: 4th gens in the snow? (AK_94LUDE)
my 92 si was impossible to drive the first winter i had it the tires were too wide but once i put 195/60r15 snows on it was much easier to handle. the key is to cut through the snow not ride on top of it.

ebrake dorifto!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 4th gens in the snow? (BlissSkr)
bliss is definitely right on the tire thing. i put larger profile skinny 195 tires on it so i gained ground clearance and could cut through the snow. my lude goes better than my mom's '02 chevy malibu, '94 honda civic, and '88 honda accord. i think it's b/c the car has so much understeer and it's so heavy that it remains stable in the snow. you're biggest concern should be other drivers. and also not to get the paint scratched and have your rear quarter panels rust by all the salt and gravel that they put on the roads.
also, gearing and compression in preludes is a big plus b/c you don't have to use the brakes on a hill. you can let your engine hold you back. where i live, some hills you can't even touch the brake or you will slide into a ditch. gotta love pennsyltucky! btw, winter time is fun time so make sure to use the E BRAKE! |
What is the best thing to do for the lude to keep the panels from rusting? I am about to be going into my first winter with this car and like some of you, have no idea what to expect. Should I wash it as much as possible? I have heard good and bad things about washing your car in the winter, so I am not sure what to do exactly...also, are any of you guys lowered, and does it make driving in snow any worse?

Re: (WillyG)
When i had winters to worry about...I moved and kept the lude. But in Pitt Pa the roads sucked. Either do the tire sizing recomended or prepare for some fun driving. I thought driving in the snow was kinda fun. E-brake manuers are great and IMO safer then understeering. At least that way you know whats gona happen.
My advice.....First good snow go to a parking lot and learn how your car is going to behave at differnet speeds while turning. But I think anyone whose driven ass-wheel cars in the snow will yell you FD is a breeze just dont be a fool. OhOh for rust. I removed the plastic trim crap that was on the fenders and when you wash be POSITIVE you dry the car compltetly, including door jabs and anywhere water could collect. |
Re: (ernestoG)
i would also recommend waxing it as soon as possible, that way you have a nice strong coat over your paint going into winter

Re: (LudaMan)
LSD = I hate the winter... so I moved to Florida, where it rains every day https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif .

Re: (Freemantle)
I'm scared to drive my lude in the winter, too. Hopefully my Perelli something-or-another-four-season-tires will be okay.
