Default Normal temp?

Alright guys I just bought a 2003 f4i and I've noticed it runs hotter than my roommates r6. On the highway it is usually around 170-180, when i cruise around light to light it is usually 185-200 and when i stop it can get up to 220. Is this normal? My roommates r6 usually doesn't show higher than 200.

Does the fan come on when you're in traffic?

220 is pushing it, if not past... when you see that get rolling asap even if you have to turn the corner. most modern bike have an auto cutoff if the temp gets to high, but 220 is way hot. the other temps are inline with normal readings

once it gets to about 222 the fan kicks on and it goes down, its below 200 when I'm riding though.

mine kicks in at 220F and gets as hot as 227F

i know i need to flush the radiator and i think i'll be adding water wetter as well.

my normal operating temp is closer to 180 when not revving to high and closer to 205-210 when pushing it.

220 is not really that hot, is it? RCs and my Superhawk run about that hot all the time.

If you're stopped for awhile, turn off the bike.

the rsv will have a melt down @220... the engine cut off comes in @ about 212 or so... 220's the boiling point of water so it may depend on your mixture, but as soon as my girl gets above 200-205 I start sweating. This is SPECIALLY problematic on engine latyouts that are inline... that was the major drawback of the square four layout in the 500's. the rear cylinders ALWAYS run a little hotter

are you sure schu? My f4i cruises at 179 on the freeway, depending on outdoor temp, and when i get stuck at traffic frequently hits 220, sometimes as high as 227. My fan doesn't even kick in until around 227, then it cools back down.
My friend's family has a VFR, and had an RC51, and both those bikes cruise at high 180s or 190 and when they get stuck they're constantly over 200. I'm gonna go read my manual, brb.

I'm in the same boat. Normal is 166-176. Slow traffic 180-190. Sitting in traffic, 221...fan kicks in.

Previous owner told me that when he was running Mobil Synth, it'd run a few degrees cooler.

I've checked with other rr owners, this seems to be the norm.

Right when it hits about 220 the fan should come on like everyone says and cool off the temp. If it keeps rising then start worrying. On a very hot and humid day 220 on a bike at a stop or slow speeds is normal. If you're fan doesnt kick in then you might be in trouble. Boiling point of water is 212 at sea level, but the radiator is a pressurized system.

f4i's run really hot mine was runnin 228 at stops last week, i believe the fan kicks in at 225 or so not to sure. i was told distilled water and water wetter will make it run a few degrees cooler...

Yes, just water will cool better than a glycol mix will. Water transfers heat a lot more effectively, hoever the problem is that it will freeze easier.

220 at a dead stop is okay as long as your fan is kicking on no later than 222 or so. I suppose there may be a lower temp switch you could get to have it kick on sooner?

that is true. i actually just asked this question the other day about my friends inlines. they all are running between 180-200 in motion because it is getting warm out. 220 is not dangerous. your fan will kick on and keep it under control. if it gets to 220 when your in motion you may have a problem, but i wouldnt be worried about it.
