Default ...Lowside!

Well, on tuesday I had my first "incident". I was coming around a large curve, in the middle of which was a road coming from a housing development. I was coming one way into the corner, while a van was coming the opposite direction quite a ways a way. About 1/4 into the corner, a car from the housing development get on the road traveling very slowly. Now I start thinking "I hope that van sees me and doesn't try to quick pass the car"...well, of course...the van DOESNT see me and gets into my lane. Now I'm thinking "#@$^WEGF#" and I get onto the shoulder. The shoulder was extremely gravely, so I don't want to risk the lowside and try to just ride it down into the ditch. I slow the bike down as much as possible and hit the grass, ride it out for about 20 feet, and the bike goes down on me. Got pretty cut up on my left side...the bikes got a couple bruises but nothing too bad. Big damage was that stator cover which I am in the process of painting right now...and its going really good. On my second coat. Lowside count = 1

cliff notes-

I'm dragging knee motogp style
van plays chicken with me
my bike falls over in ditch
I r0xoR3 at painting stator covers

Who said I was speeding asshat?

*edit* In case anyone else is going to miss the joke, I was hardly "draging knee", that would be the sarcastic joking part of the story.

I had been riding all morning with my gloves, jacket, and helmet...went inside for a break and decided it was too hot for a jacket so I took it off......then proceeded to get in an accident. Moral of the story = wear your jacket even if it's 90 degrees

It just seemed like you weren't taking any responsibility for the accident and like it was everyone's fault except yours. It was also unclear how fast you were going but I assumed it was too fast since you were in a residential area and couldn't stop the bike or stay on the road. When I ride around neighborhoods I always leave room in case something like this happens because it does happen more in those areas. It's clear im not sinking my teeth into you, I just felt you maybe you might need to look at yourself for some of the blame.

I wasn't in a residential area, it was about 5 miles out of town on a Highway where the speedlimit is 55. And no, I'm not taking any responsibility - it wasn't my fault. Another car came into MY lane, I got on the gravel covered shoulder and decided to try to ride it out in the ditch. I wasn't tracking my bike on the street, I was just out for a nice ride, I was doing 60mph max.

That would have been a good thing to put in your first post.

Whose fault it is is largely irrelevant when you are laying on the ground surrounded by plastic bits and picking grass out of your ***.

You can choose not to take responsibility for the accident, but you were the one riding the motorcycle the was involved in a *single vehicle* accident. Now I wasn't there, but from how you described the situation it may have been avoidable. You avoided the van which was excellent, but fumbled on the follow through. **** happens and you live and you learn but absolving yourself so easily of responsibility might be a bad idea.

I am glad you are ok though, and hoped you walked away from this with more than "cage drivers suck". Hopefully you have been rehearsing the accident over and over trying to find out what you could have done differently.

Oh yeah, when it's 90+ degrees out mesh jackets kick ***.

Pesonally I think you shouldn't have crashed, there were several things you could do to keep traction on that gravel shoulder. You could have pulled the clutch in, and used the rear brake very lightly until you came to a stop. You also could have put your feet down to keep the bike stable in case it lurches to one side and applied a very minimal amount of front brake.

You suck at descriptions so I can't really picture this scenario at all but just some suggestions for next time you get run off the road by a van in your lane.

I'll be the first to admit, the new housing developments have the smoothest, stickiest asphalt I've ever seen. That **** is so fresh it just grabs rubber, it's the best the day after a good rain washes off all the surface dirt the trucks sometimes leave. Back in the day when we couldn't afford tracktime we would have the place coned off and just kill that ****. The perfect camber in the corners are great for scraping hard parts. I'ts like daytona at 1:12 scale. That said, I'm all grown up now so I leave it at the track. Glad to hear the damage is minimal. The last time I dumped in the grass, the bike took a divot out of the turf the size of a watermelon and jumped 20 feet.

Alright, new description so I don't get anymore "keep it on the track" comments. There is a long two lane sweeper, farily sharp. In the middle of this curve, a road LEADING FROM a housing development connects. I was comming one way around the curve while a van was comming another way. The van does not see me. As I enter the corner, I see a car pulling onto the curve from the housing develpment. At the point in time I am doing about 60mph, and I think to myself "Theres no way this moron in the van will try to pass the car around a corner" But, I cut off the gas and somewhat continue to coast around the curve. As I get about 30-50ft (hard to say, but pretty close) to the oncoming car, the van which I was sure saw me attempts to overtake the car...on a curve, doing about 60mph. I am now in MY lane traveling head on at a van. I crap my pants, and very quickly dodge the van to my right...this puts me on the shoulder of the road, but heading almost directly towards the ditch. I attempted to continue riding on the shoulder, but its hard/scary to corner a bike which is now standing straight up on 2 ft wide patch of gravel. In my head, I tell myself I'm not going to make the corner, so I try to slow down as much as possible and just ride it out in the ditch. I slow the bike to maybe 35-40 before hitting the grass (again, the shoulder was not wide and there was A LOT of gravel, so I had only a couple feet in which to try to stop) as I get hit the grass I pull in the clutch and just try to coast it out. The bike gets quirky and first tries to toss me off to the right side, as soon as it settles I lose control (mind you on a steep ditch with soft ground) and slide on my left side for maybe 10ish feet or so. Going back at looking at the scene of the indident, it looks like the grounds was so soft the my front tire just completely sunk in cause there is a small crater area before my bike hit.

I was paying attention to every car on the road, had I not been I would have gone head on into a van.

Possibly I could have "avoided" the crash, but I would have like to see anyone put in the exact same possition and made it out without a scratch. Sometimes, because of lack of options and conditions, its difficult to save yourself from a spill.

new cliff notes:

I'm motogp styling (insert sarcasm) at 60mph 5 miles out of town on a highway
a van comes into my lane, I dodge it
due to the dodging maneuver, I am on the gravely shoulder of a road
i think i should ride in the ditch, rather than lowside on pavement
soft ground = lowside
