520 Chain Conversion
Well, I have my 94 F2 ripped apart right now, and I have to order a new chain and sprockets. I was thinking of doin the 520 conversion cuz I can get the chain and sprockets off eBay for like $150, but I can't find a 530 set at that good of a price. I was also going to go with a 15/45 or 14/45. What do you guys think?? Has anyone done this to their bike?? If so, what did you think of it??
I personally haven't done the 520 conversion, but from what I hear, it's lighter than running a 530 chain, but you'll need to replace the 520 chain more often. Obviously there's some trade-off.
As for gearing, I'm running 14/45 right now (stock is 15/43). It's like getting a new bike. Plus, it's relatively cheap. However, your speedo will read higher and you will accumulate more miles on your bike (because of the error of the speedo). I'm assuming your speedometer, like mine, does not run off the front wheel. And, your top-end speed will be lower (so instead of being able to theoretically run 160mph, you will only be able to go 145mph). But, I think this is a good trade-off, since I'm rarely at 145mph.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'm gonna go ahead and order it in a week or 2. I guess I'll be stuck ridin my dad's Harley til then. The front end just doesn't get up on that thing like the CBR.
I think I'll go with the 14/45. I need the torque anyway. And I always run up around 120 or 130, but I only do 145 or 150 once in a while, so I can handle not being able to.

Also, you will be running at a higher rpm for a given speed - if you used to be at 7k @ 80mph, now it might be 8k @ 80mph. Something to consider if you have a loud (ie, D&D) exhaust.
Im running a 520 with a decent sized sprocket ...Its a complete pain in the *** .. I have to tighten the chain every 2 weeks or so .. I ride alot but still .. im going back to 530 for sure
Man, this sucks. I'm kinda torn now. I may just save up a few extra bones and keep the 530.
My exhaust is a Vance and Hines SS2R slip on. Its not stupid loud, so I think I'll make it.
Thanks for the info. Anyone here around the STL area??

Yeah, I have the same exhaust on mine, and it's fine on the highway. Just remember to bring earplugs, especially if you've got a high-flowing helmet.

heres a test. Go out and ride your normal pace. Then just give it a bit more gas so that you are about 500-750 rpm higher than what you were cruising at. This is what it will sound like. Dont worry about the sound. The torque gains are well worth it.
Im prob going to still hate on 520 chains but I have a D.I.D NON O ring chain .... so thats why it sucks ... Im actyaly going to buy an O ring 520 chain soon and Ill let you guys now. I cant give my sprocket up for a 530 quite yet : p
Theres a huge range in the tensile strength of the 520 chain out there. A lot of them are designed for bikes that weigh half as much and have half as much power as a sportbike.
520 will be ok and you will accelerate slightly faster... the number has to do with tensile strenght... the 520 being the weakest, 530 being the strongest... anyone over 600 isnt recommended going below 525. Just be careful you're not jerking the chain with hard roll ons all the time, it may snap...
The number is the size of the chain and has nothing to do with strength... I think the first number, 5 in this case, has to do with the pitch of the side plates, and the rest, 20, has to do with the width of the chain.
I remember talking to a guy who put a motocross 520 chain on his cbr900, and he didn't even get one week out of it before it started spitting the rollers right off of the chain.

Maybe you should read this... the first number is length, the second two are width, which relates to tensile strenght... this is why they use 525 stock on bikes with over 100hp and can get away with 520 on 500s and older 600s. The diff between the 20 (1/4inch thick) and 25 (5/16s) thick is a big deal

Yeah, that is what I said. The first number is the pitch and the rest is the width... but you can get 520 chain in many different strengths even though the plate thickness is exactly the same.
Some 525 chains are weaker than the premium types of 520 chain. My buddy used to run 520 on his modified GSXR1100 with no issues. If you get the correct chain grade, its not a problem.
