Honda CRX: Significantly worse than average crash test rating
My 84 which seemed like a death trap was stolen...supposedly they found it upside down totaled...but the guy wasn't there. So i guess they are very breakable, but they must be good to its occupants
...they didnt even find blood...damnit i wanted him to be hurt

in a 1g crx, several years ago, a friend of a friend was nailed by a drunk driver who was going about 70mph. said crx driver was injured, and the car was definitely totaled, but he walks and talks fine, has all his appendages, etc. he basically gives credit to the crx for absorbing the impact and possibly saving his life, considering the size of the car and the force of the impact, etc.
Oh my god, I'm off on a diatribe!!!
A CRX is safer than a motorcycle, but not as safe as a Tahoe (when talking about an impact)!!!!
But dang, due to the federal required safety equipment on new cars, it's pretty much impossible to make one that weighs less than 2500 pounds (the Lotus Elise is the exception and even it has waivers in regards to safety equipment).
I'd gladly buy a car that doesn't meet federal requirements and here is why;
Here is a photo of a car that I saw here in L.A. It was registered in Mexico and is a "smart-car roadster".

Due to not having to meet the federal safety requirements, the weight is only around 1700 pounds. (it also doesn't meet smog requirements)
The engine is small, but it gets 75 miles to the gallon!! (the owner discribed the performance much like an old VW bus)
Even if it was required to meet smog requirements, I'd bet the milage would still be around 65 MPG.
No special, complex "hybrid" drivetrain. Just a basic light car.
The bottom line, in my mind, is that if we could drive in an intelligent manner we wouldn't have to have the federal government protect us and we could tell the middle east to bite off and keep their oil!!!!!

if the government stopped trying to protect us from every damn thing, and everyone stopped sueing everyone else for there own lack of responsibility, i might be proud to be an american again..until then, i'm only sorta proud..more like, not ashamed, not proud.
ick.
i'd LOVE to buy a 1700 lbs car.
my 2000 lbs 90 hatch has way too much power, is too low, and even with a rear roll bar and steel-frame race seats w/ harnesses, will never be safe, in a million years.. i've crashed one HARD around a tree, and man, did it bend.
drive safe, and drive defensively, with a little bit of offense sprinkled in for good measure

i just hope NOBODY (especially me
) get in an accident like that or worse..... my brother just witnesed a civic 4dr get hit in the middle, and literally, no joke, the car split in half. he has pics.... CRAZY stuff....
one thing to give your self EXTRA saftey, is to obviously wear your seatbelt and to drive normally, not like you stole it ect.... (but i must admit its fun! lol)

I rely on my motorcycles to get me around on nice days in the summer, and the EF and EG when I have to carry something or the weather's bad. Either of my transportation choices are "deathtraps"
It doesn't bother me that its a small car and will lose a fight against an SUV. Just be smart and don't pick a fight with an SUV
A friend of mine has bought bigger and bigger cars, starting with a chevy beretta, moving on to a buick, then an olds, then a huge pickup. He thinks he's getting safer every time.
He's wrecked the new truck a couple times, causing extensive damage to the other vehicles. Never has learned to pay attention while driving, and spends much of his driving time on the phone, noticably distracted from driving duty.
I have owned over a dozen cars, even had one with total brake failure coming off the expressway and I managed to stop it safely by grinding against the curb rather than plowing into the car in front of me.
It's the driver that determines the safety in the majority of cases. I flipped and rolled a 1989 Subaru Justy (AKA Ford Festiva). It was my only wreck, and it was the smallest car I've ever owned. I did everything I could to avoid the wreck, but I hit black ice.
That's the only situation where a small car scares me because I, as the driver, am unable to avoid the wreck.
Stay off the phone while driving, keep an eye on the road, and in your mirrors. Just this morning some guy in a service truck was coming up on my rear at a stoplight and on a cellphone, it didn't look like he was gonig to slow down in time so I flashed my brakes, and checked the lane next to me. When he got too close, I moved into the open turnlane and he slammed on the brakes, skidding to a stop halfway through the intersection, nearly t-boning a neon.
Alot of accidents can be avoided, and those that can't, well that's just part of life. Just as was stated earlier, what happened to the days of getting hurt and accepting it rather than blaming others for your problem. A small car will never be a safe place to wreck, so concentrate yourself on not wrecking.

Being that i'm old enough to remember when the EF civic's and crx's came out, i would say its an anfair comparison.
When those cars came out in 1988, they were at the top of the list as one of the safest cars in the class of sub compacts, in comparison to other cars at the time.
Almost 20 years later, cars are safer? Of coarse they are!

not only that but if you look on your doorjam the nice sticker says it meets all federal saftey guidelines in place at time of manufacture. So its at least as safe as cars built in the same years.

Too true, it seems like every wreck thread in this forum has bitch on a phone involved in it, usually driving an oversized SUV that makes them feel "safe".

I got rear-ended by a durango with a dumb blonde bitch who went as soon as the light went green. I did not.

my '90 EE2 wagon (which is a little bigger than a rex, but it's still a tin can) has so far survived 2 deer, 1 F-150, 1 E-350, and a few other minor things. sure, it's not pretty to look at, but i've walked away every time (and driven away most of them).
yeah, if some moron in a Ford Exterminator or Hummer ***** Replacement runs a light, you're squished. but you'd be squished in almost anything that isn't a big SUV.
you can't really beat Newton.

Volvo's are really the only "car" that I'd feel safe in. They're ******* beefy.
A friend of mine got t-boned BAD by a truck and although he now had a lot of disabilities, he is making a come-back. The crash investigators said the only reason he is even alive is because that old-school volvo was a tank.

when i 1st got my car it was completely gutted, and she hatted it because she said it looked like a death trap, since then i put all interior in and she is fine with it, i told her about it having poor safety and she said to not tell her that.
lol that pic of the rex with the hummer is my pic and my car, i would never think someone would put a pic of my pos in a thread as a refereance pic lol. funny thing is the driver of that hummer is a blond bimbo who does talk on her phone, tries to entertain for car seated sun in back seat, and drive at the same time. i wouldnt be surprised if she would use the rear view mirror to put on makeup while drive also...
scariest thing i ever seen is seeing a college girl in an suv pass me on the highway with her left foot by the window and a slushy in her right hand...
