Default 2000 CR-V Valves

Greetings from a new member of the forum! We have a 2000 CR-V that we bought 5 years ago when it had 147K mikes. Now it has 210K mikes.

Recently the truck started to stall after running for a while. Then after waiting a few minutes it would start again, only to repeat the process.

I’ve replaced the fuel pump and sending unit, the fuel pump relay, the fuel filter, and the plugs and wires, with no luck. Then I learned about the valve lash issues with this model. I had never checked them or adjusted them because I didn’t know. So I checked the clearances and some of them were tight, so I adjusted them to specs. Still, no luck.

I bought a $30 compression test kit at Harbor Freight. Hot and cold readings are the same….150 psi on cylinders 1 to 3 but just 90 psi on cylinder 4. That is low but I’ve read of much worse.

My question is…where to go from here? Should I pull the head and inspect the valve seats? Replace damaged valves or maybe all the valves? Or maybe invest the time and money in a replacement head? There are heads on eBay for about $275 that appear to be in good shape. Or a remanufactured head runs about $575.

We paid $3200 for the truck and it might be worth $2000 now, so I’m wary of putting too much into it. Any kind of significant work at a shop is going to cost more than the car is worth. I have little doubt that I can do whatever needs to be done, but I’m just trying to spend my time and money the best I can.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

PJ
