Wiring or cluster issue?
I unhooked my cluster to replace the lights in it. Once I put the new led’s in and hooked it up to test it, I noticed a burning smell and immediately shut it off. The only lights that don’t work on the cluster are the fuel, temp, rpm, seat belt and mph. The lights on the switches above the cluster are out (hazard aux ect.) and the ac lights are out as well. everything works in terms of rpm, switches, ac control. It’s just the lighting that’s out. |
Re: Wiring or cluster issue?
Don't understand what you did.
Were the lights in the cluster originally LEDs or not? Were you replacing burnt out lights? If you replaced the lights correctly then it can only be due to having the wiring extended that is causing issues Still check out the fuses (all of them, use a test light) |

@avisitor
I replaced the originals with LED's once I tested it to see if they all worked, I noticed the burning smell. The lights weren't burnt out, they were just very dim. |

whats that lol as you saw by some of my other posts I’m not too car savvy >.< |
Re: Wiring or cluster issue?
194 is the bulb part number. Very commonly used.
180 means to flip the socket around, thinking is the socket's polarity might have something to do with it My only thought now is to check the cluster with all the lights on Or, have one on at a time. Maybe because it was new that it had a film on them??? IDK |
Re: Wiring or cluster issue?
@avisitor I put all the old bulbs back in. im starting to think its a wiring issue if it made all the lights on the temp control, switches above cluster and only certain cluster lights go out after I smelt burning :/
I mean the car is 25 years old and pulling on the old cold wires was not a good idea lol |

The burning smell indicated a short to ground in a wire or the cluster printed circuit board (PCB), likely caused by installation of the LEDs. A short to ground leads to high amperage through and heating of the affected wire or PCB. Look for a wire with melted insulation or melted PCB.
What car? 94 Del Sol? Crazy how replacing a dang light bulb caused all this smh |
Re: Wiring or cluster issue?
So I figured out the issue. If anyone ever has to remove the control switch panel, make sure that the two green connecters for the hazard light and the rear defroster are plugged into the correct spot. One of them has 6 prongs while the other has 5.
If you put them in wrong, it will short out the cluster. Also the lights on the control switches and temperate control will not turn on. smh |
