help, my friend's car was smoking, and now won't start

ok, my friend has a stock 92' honda civic dx and yesterday on his way home...his engine started to smoke pretty bad, it felt like it was gonna die, and right when he lifted his foot off the gas pedal, it died. and now, it won't start again. you can hear the car trying to turn on, but it can't. what could possibly happen?? https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emdgust.gif

Re: (uranazo)

he was panicing at the time, and didn't really look at it, all he did was run out and opened the hood.

yea, but if it was overheated, shouldn't it start again once it cools down?

Re: (b00st)

maybe he jumped timing.

itsJDMyo 12-27-2003 09:52 AM

Re: (rewsnaeht)

what do you mean by that?

Re: (b00st)

timing belt could have jumped a tooth and would cause it not to start again.

not if something seriously fucked up ... or as stated above, the timing belt jumped a tooth...

Re: (uranazo)

well, all he told me that there was just smoke. he didn't hear any weird noises or anything...and now the car won't start anymore

uranazo 12-27-2003 10:00 AM

if the timing was jumped, whoa, depending on how much, u pretty much can say good bye motor... the whole head would probally be destroyed along with a good chance the bottom end...

Well if it overheated it would start again when it cooled down.

What color was the smoke? This sounds more to me like a blown head gasket than a car that has jumped timing. But it is still possible that timing is the case.

well i snapped my timing belt @5k and nothing happened to my motor.

then i did the timing belt at TDC but 180* off, holy shit the motor sounded horrible all i heard was valves slamming into the pistons https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emdgust.gif

Re: (rewsnaeht)

the smoke was white and shouldn't oil be leaking from the engine if it was a blown headgasket though?

Are you gay, english or retarded? If the timing jumped it doesn't mean your motor is gone. It may have very minor damage but that is easily fixed. More often than not when the timing jumps all that needs replacing is the timing belt and possibly the tensioner.

White smoke is coolant burning. Sounds to me like it may have been the head gasket. Check the coolant levels in the car and see if they are below normal just to make sure it was coolant burning off and not some other little thing.

Not always. Normaly you will see more coolant than oil leakage.

Re: (JDM-97CX)

he checked the coolang earlier and it was still full though, could it be a cracked radiator also?

Well maybe not much burned off. 9 1/2 times out of 10 white smoke is coolant burning off. I would let the car sit for a while and see if it will start when it is totaly cold.
