Re: is this ecu chipped?

as far as tuning who knows what the basemaps are, only way to find out is to take it to a tuner

It's chipped, but they soldered the chip in an it will be a pain to get it out. If you can snip the legs off the chip, it will be easier to remove the chip without damaging the board.

It's not. Only the ZIF socket is soldered to the board.

that doesn't look like a ZIF socket... that looks like a low profile DIN.

OP: i would be very careful when removing the chip. when you get it up add a ZIF socket for easier install/removal later.

The socket is soldered on the ECU, but it does look like they soldered some of the legs of the EEPROM on the socket, which is idiotic IMO.

A couple of macro shots of the socket+chip area will help.

In any case. The chip shouldn't be soldered. It doesn't look like it is to me but that might be due to the low quality of the pic.

read more. moates.com and PGMFI.org if you want to read a lot more.

chipped is good if it's needed. but it can be just as bad as good if the data on chip (or the tune... or the basemap...) is crap. also in most cases the chip must be removed to be "burned" or reprogrammed.
