97 Civic timing light help ?
I want to check my 97 Civic EX D16Y8 with my timing light. I know what RPM to use but I do not know what else is necessary for idling as for as electronic service connector jumping , knock sensor bypassing or other stuff like that. My service manual explains connecting Official Honda Service meter ABCDE to the XYZ.
I'm looking for a simple old-school method with my light if that is possible ? Thx |
Re: 97 Civic timing light help ? (alotawatts)
let car warm up (fan should cycle twice)
Jumper the service connector (blue connector hanging under the dash above the ECU). paperclip or wire or something to short the 2 contacts hook up timing light to 1st cylinder Shoot at "red" line on the main pully, lining it up with the long black line on your lower timing belt covor If not correct, loosen distributor and twist till it is correct. Tighten bolts when you're done and remove service connector. |

Thanks project-mercy
So the service connector only has two contact points total ? |

Go hook up a timing light without the jumper and watch it https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif
You'll notice that the distributor cap is astoundingly wide. Reasoning, it gives your ECM/ICM the ability to 'tweak' your timing, and it'll do it through a series of high and low idle periods, basically making your car impossible to time accuratly. Jumping the service connector removes the ECM's ignition tweaks. |
