top engine cleaner question
I have 75k miles on my '06 civic ex. Has anybody used the honda top engine cleaner? And if so was it worth the hassel of running it through the engine?
I think you are better off just running a tank full of good fuel every once and a while or use a cleaning product in the fuel.
I use Techron in my tank once every few months I don't really see a difference in power or performance after wards, but it is good to clean the crud off the fuel sender contacts.
you are better off just adding something to the fuel to clean and lube the top end, you could create problems on a perfectly good running engine, why not try something like Lucas fuel additive.
I buy the big bottle(32oz) it's way cheaper that way about 10 bucks here in the east, you add 3 oz to a tank full, safer than possibly harming your engine.

Dont recommend any top engine cleaner or throttle cleaner. There usally sold as a kit. I had customers who have done there own top engine clean and since your car is drive by wire and not throttle cable. You can mess up your REL TP value. That value is only seen through a Honda Scan tool. If you mess it up you can fry your ECU. You are also damaging your cat with the unburned fuel in passing through it. I had about 4 cars with that issue within the past 3 months in the shop. You would need to buy a new throttle body and ecu. Just use a good fuel injector cleaner or run on higher premuim gas for a week.
thanks for the input, I do use Lucas fuel treatment currently every oil change. I used to work at Honda and we used a de-carb bottle that was sucked into the intake trought the brake booster vacuum line. It worked great on the Passport and older civics that had higher mileage.
I take it that Kevin8737, works for HONDA? I will use your input and not mess with the throttle body. I will continue to use the LUCAS fuel treatment.

I guess you missed the post last night about putting anything in your throttle body, on these cars it absolutely screws up everything.(the throttle body itself and the ECU)
That is old technology made for old cars, might have been OK on some older cars but not on these newer models.
Stick with the lucas, I' using up a quart I bought 3 oz at a time, it gave me additional 2 mpg but I'm using it more for lubrication I don't really care for more mpg, it's worth the 10 bucks to me.

Good stick with lucas and yea I work at Honda. Just for heads up, you can use throttle body cleaner on other drive by wire systems except for the 06 and up Civics. They cant take it. Also since you own the 06 Civic. Warranty extension 8years or unlimited mileage for your block. They are know for cracking on the front by the water pipe. I do about 3 blocks a month. So just check it at times.
A Year ago I used to clean the carbon deposits on the valves by diconnecting the exhuast before the CAT if it had one. Then heat the motor to operating the temperature. Then spray cold water down the intake from the carb. It was said that you could hear the carbon pinging against the metal underneath the car.
