Want to convert from Automatic to Manual

Hi, I'm from Caribbean and am the owner of a JDM 2001 EX Coupe with Automatic Transmission. I want to get rid of this automatic and go with a manual transmission. But nowhere can I find information on the gearbox models or the parts to make a complete and successful conversion.

Can you guys help? Thanks.

Japan never made a coupe, only sedans for the 7th generation Civic. You also didn't look very hard for the information.

Also, there wasn't a coupe in Japan. If its like the European market RHD coupes, its a converted RHD.

Re: Want to convert from Automatic to Manual

Hey, it's your car... My $0.02 is :wack:. A lot of money, time and frustration with little to no benefit. If it is for "the driving experience" or "look cool factor" well... dumb reason IMHO. If it's simply something you need to do because... well... you just need to do it... Well, okay, I get that. ;)

I don't know if anybody makes a shift kit or performance parts for a Honda automatic transmissions (somebody must), you may want to check that out. I grew up playing at the 1/4 mile track and I have yet to see anybody press a clutch, shift out of gear, shift into gear and release the clutch with the same speed and smoothness as an automatic with a shift kit.

Another (often highly overlooked, by younger males) benefit of the Automatic is that it free's up your hand when your girl is sitting beside you. Don't have a girl? Get one, they are a lot more fun to play with than a manual transmission :lmao: If she's not... Then you need to toss her back and get yourself another... Don't worry, there's lot's to choose from! Granted, both are prone to leaving you stranded on the side of the road when not handled correctly. If girls aren't your thing and guys are... well I guess you still have a (....) to play with . Drive responsibly now... you may cause an accident and that would be very awkward to explain. (No officer, I didn't realize..., I just thought it would be too dangerous to do 69...).

Seriously though, isn't the point of a cool ride to attract a fair member of the opposite sex (same sex, if that's how you roll)? Wouldn't the $ and time you'd spend on the conversion be better spent on items that will make people ohh and ahh. I have yet to have a girl ohh and ahh over my cars transmission? (though I have heard about video's on the internet that prove otherwise ). As I have and have had both (automatic and manual vehicles) I can say that I have had girls comment that they perfer the automatics as I have more ability to focus on them... (holding hands you dirty minded people...)

Wouldn't it just be easier and more cost effective to sell your current car and buy a car with a manual transmission? We're talking about 10/11 year old cars here... there's not a lot of value left in them and since manual transmission cars sell for less than automatics (majority of the time), you will probably come ahead in the deal.

I'm sure I opened a can of worms here... (several cans actually) Let the games begin! :swords:

Took a very quick look at the link you provided (very quick). While I think this is a strange thing to do, there's no doubt many people who want to do it. My question is to do with the radiator. Are the rad's not different on automatics vs. manuals?

Cheers

They have different part numbers, so one could assume that they were different. However! The item pictures are exactly the same!

Regardless, you could still use the radiator for the automatic. You just wouldn't have any ATF lines connected to it.

Re: Want to convert from Automatic to Manual

@little viking

The reason I am enquiring is because I want to plan for when the automatic transmission gives trouble. Besides, I have always owned manual cars, my only automatics have been two hondas, this one is the second. I had an EK3 before and that car was a true workhorse and champion. I was sorry when I sold it, but I decided the EM2 was a better investment maintenance wise.

So truth be told, I'm planning. Thanks for the link guys. Is there a link which spells out exactly which gearboxes these 01-05 civics have similar to the ton of information available for EK civics?

Re: Want to convert from Automatic to Manual

I did the conversion about a year ago, my auto trans was giving out and came across a local part out on the whole car and got everything complete so it was not a big deal, much more fun to drive
only gear box you can use is the D17a1(lx dx vp), D17a2 (ex) or the D17a6 (hx) im not sure if the Caribbean they have different models, if you want more info about the trans swap you can pm me

Re: Want to convert from Automatic to Manual

Fair enough, I'm just messin with ya. There's a lot of fun to be had with these sorts of projects. unless you can get the parts cheap though... We really are talking about 10 year old cars.

I've rebuilt motors, swapped transmissions and dumped more money into old beaters than I care to think about. If your car is so far gone that you need to swap the tranny, much of the rest of the car is most likely on last legs as well. Sometimes it's less expensive to simply upgrade the car...
