Accord 2010- loud rattle cold start
 

Hello,

I get this loud rattle when I start my car but only on the first start. When I called a Honda dealership a few years ago I was told by their tech that my Accord had a defective part, I believe the actuator is what he said, and that I didn't have to replace the part. The tech stated the defective part would not impact the long term health of my engine. I was a low on money so I didn't bother following up. The vehicle continues to run fine but when I was googling the issue the other day someone else stated the problem could cause an engine failure.

I took the Accord to a local mechanic, not Honda, and he didn't see anything wrong with the starter or actuator but I'm not sure if he really looked. Also, he may have had a problem duplicating the sound since it wasn't a cold start.

I really need advice and I'm low on money. Do I need to replace the Actuator or was the first Honda tech correct?

Considering that the first tech told you, a few years ago, that it wouldn't be a problem,he was probably right.......

Yes, sounds like VTC actuator. I don't know how this is not a long term problem but the noise is timing chain slap. Honda has a service bulletin and even extended the option of replacement to 150k (Don't hold me to this) I believe on certain models. My TSX does this every morning, and when parked for long periods of time after the majority of the oil has settled in the pan. Last I've seen, the replacement part did not fix the issue entirely and their was no 100% guaranteed remedy. Therefore, mine has been this way for 3 years. May let go tomorrow lol, may not.

My advice, let it ride and get another cheap/used back up gas sipper.

^^^ This. Very common on TSX CU2 chassis. Most people just deal with it.

When i had noise it turned out to be my tensioner ( 2012 Honda Accord V6)
Had it repaired under warranty!

Yeah, this is a typical rattle/startup noise from the K24Zx series line of engines.

I was trying to imply you have a totally different engine than the one we are discussing here. Not quite apples to oranges but not apples to apples either.

Although, the OP never stated it was V6 or I4, so you may be just as correct as anyone.

I have a 2011 and have the same problem. yes, the timing sollenoid has a problem. However, a quick you tube search will yield several methods to fix it. the hardest part is that you have to get down behind the belt assembly but the part is not all that expensive. the dealer will charge you about $250-300 for parts and labor. honda charges about $80 for the part, try rock auto dot com.

Limited info included with the original post but if you're lucky enough to have a a PZEV vehicle, they have an extended warranty on emission related parts. The VVT solenoid is included and is listed as 15 years or 150kmile.
