Shift Lock Problems

1991 Honda Accord
Automatic

When you depress the brake pedal the click from the solenoid to let you shift it out of park will not happen, brake lights do come on. Also, when I turn the key to the on position the solenoid under the shifter will sometimes actuate many times (like I'm pressing the brake pedal down and releasing it over and over, without actually touching the brake pedal then it will randomly stop). Is it the solenoid that's going bad? Or is it a switch somewhere on the brake pedal that is going bad? (I've tested both pairs of solenoids on the transmission, lock ups and shift and both pairs are good) I've take my "center console" pieces off so I can see the actual shift lock solenoid but I'm kind of stuck on how to take it off. I cannot pull any codes as I have tried to jump the switch under the passenger side dash but S stays solid and the check engine light comes on but both of them do not blink me any codes. Any help is appreciated!

Edit: Now when the key is turned from the off to the on (not start) position the solenoid will click like you're depressing and releasing the brake pedal every time. Key turned to off position *click* key turned to on position *click*.

Re: Shift Lock Problems

Okay new information, I think there is a short somewhere or a relay is bad because when the key is in the on position there's a faint clicking noise coming from under the driver side dash that clicks when the shift lock solenoid clicks (to release the lock for the gear shift handle). Does anyone know if there's a relay underneath the driver side dash that controls the shift lock solenoid under the center console by the gear selector? The whole thing sounds like you're pressing on the brake pedal then releasing the brake pedal over and over again.

I have the same issue, but let me ask couple of questions:
1. Did you replace the brake light switch? Or do you have brake light when you press on the brake pedal?
2. Does your horn work?

Does anyone know if I can just remove my shift lock solenoid. It seems to be sticking and won’t shift from park, it takes some wiggling around and happens about 3 times a month. If I remove it completely , will that solve the problem? Don’t care about safety

Or, you could simply insert your key into the override slot, shift the car int Neutral. And then start the car normally.
Makes for a nice unintentional anti-theft device.
