Default Reverse wont work :'(

Hey guys!! I have a 1994 honda accord ex automatic with 149,000 miles.

my problem is that two days ago my reverse stopped working, I drove it in 10 inches of snow and I would get it stuck, sometimes i would here the engine slam when pressing the gas. now two days later evertime i put it in reverse the transmission grinds violantly. all the other gears work just fine!! I believe its the differential gear but I am not sure! help would be really appreciated!

Were you by chance sitting still but spinning your wheels for long periods of time?

Nothing says transmission failure from heat like spinning your wheels for a long time while stuck in snow. The heat builds up FAST.

That's a lot of snow. When you say slam, did you press on your brakes before changing gears? Or did you just go from D to R without making sure the wheels were stopped? Possibly broke some teeth off the reverse gear. If the differential was damaged it would make noise in both R and D gears.

I kind of did go back and forth with the r and d but i would go on r then press the brakes a little bit then go on d cause i needed the car to rock back and forth to move it from the snow. But now i need to know wat is broken in the trans.

It does not matter what's broken in the trans at this point. The trans will have to be torn down. Start looking for a used trans or calling around to see how much it would cost to rebuild your current trans.

I went to a mechanic and he said that its the reverse differential. Is thier two differentials, one for reverse and one for foward cause if its the reverse diff then i would have it more easier when repairing it.....

It might be time to find another mechanic. There’s no reverse differential, there’s a reverse gear and only one differential.

Like another poster said the reverse gear is damaged. This not a simple R&R repair as the transmission will have to be taken apart to replace. Given that all the broken pieces have now been circulating in the transmission the trans will need to be rebuilt entirely.

If you're still driving the car it's only a matter of time before the trans dies.

The problem with rocking a car, is if the tire is still spinning in reverse, you may not know that the wheel is still moving when you shift gears. The momentum of the wheel/axle still spinning can break the internal parts when the trans is shifted the opposite direction.
As mentioned, the mechanic that spoke of two differentials is a hack/crook. There is only one, and it is located between where your two axles go into the transmission.
Most likely you broke teeth off the reverse idler gear, and probably damaged 1st gear as well. Reverse is attained by a reverse idler gear that meshes between first and the output shaft. If first does not grind, it most likely is just the reverse idler that is damaged. But it's really hard to say. Best bet would be to have the transmission rebuilt or replaced by a reputable mechanic.

Is it unrealistic to think that it may be a bad solenoid?
