This cooling system troubleshooting page may help you:

http://www.garage411.com/CoolingSystem

The cooling system troubleshooting part is located halfway down the page. Good luck.

This is a good site to help determine whether it is a blown head gasket, bad radiator cap, etc.

Pull the cap, run the cold car at idle for a few minutes; watch the top of the cap for bubbles. While the radiator system is designed to inhale coolant and exhale air, it is easier for the system to work out major air pockets if the cap is off. You may also want to bleed the system; there's usually a nut on the bottom of the engine.

Run the car from cool to hot for 2 minutes; pull off the radiator cap. The fluid will be warm but not scalding. If there's pressure, there is no significant leak in the coolant system into the engine, tranny, or onto the ground. Another way to tell is to fill the radiator fluid reservoir half-way, run it at idle for 15 minutes, and see if it sucks in fluid or expels fluid. If you do that, throw a piece of cardboard under the car and see what you can catch.

Idle the car, Turn the AC on full cold blast; this will short the fans infront of your radiator on at 100% speed. You can also tell by turning the fans by hand, they should spin free and not be stiff. If they do not spin, or the car is excessively hot and they do not spin, you have your problem.

If the fans work, radiator gets upto pressure, and there are no leaks, you are left with two possibilities; a bad water pump, or a bad thermostat. \

Locate the crankshaft accessory pully. Set the E Brake, Put the car up on stands with a jack so you have 3 points of rest on a level surface, keep the tires clear of the jacks, start the car up and put a screwdriver to your ear. if that scares you, an extra-long stethascope and some tape will do. You can generally hear a bad pump if it gets that bad.

thanks for the info guys. the one thing im still puzzled about is why am i still losing coolant. i took out the old thermostat and drove without it. it seem like im not losing as much coolant or none at all. i just went and bought a new thermostat so hopefully thats the problem.

Make sure your fans are coming on. If not, then the radiator may be blowing the coolant out the cap since the water is getting too hot.
