looks like someone used a torch/heat on the small end of the rod? maybe they though it was a pressed fit piston pin?

i dont think so.

Maybe i can explain better than the pics do. The grey is some type of deposit. its built up. Looks as if i could sand or file it off.

Im assuming the color change of the metal is from the friction from something

sorry if this dont help as in if you know this much already, but that is from heat ALOT of heat. i would think red hot. would appear lack of lubrication or maybe sizing of the rod to wrist pin was incorrect. something of that nature, how does the wrist pin look, and the piston where the wrist pin goes in??? look like that during assembly???

engine ran for less than4k miles. Only thing out of the norm is some very slight rod knock and a couple of blown gaskets.

well i dont know so im not helping but it would be worth alot to know if it happened during assembly like someone heated it or if it happened running. if someone did it no big deal, but if the engine did it there is a problem. sorry for not helping anything

I had a piston melt on a friends motor due to a igniter failure and it deposited on the rod just like that. Check you pistons.
