Default Turbo-ize my Trooper

So guys, I need your help. I just bought this brand spanking new Isuzu Trooper and this SUV ROCKS!! However, it is slow as hell and I would like to make it go fast- and I mean fast- like the little rice burners you guys have. I thought about adding a turbo or two to increase horsepower, but not too much where it rips out the 4-wheel drive system. Fixing/replacing that could get expensive. Anyway, the 3.5 V-6 is solid and produces low emission. The stock engine propels the truck to 60 in a little over 9 seconds. I would like to see this drop to 5-6 sec. and hit the 1/4 mile between 13-14 seconds.

While you guys are preparing your suggestions, I would like to hear any opinions about slamming the truck 5-6 inches.

I am so glad I got this truck, the trunk space is AMAZING!!

Trooper

ps. I also noticed some of you guys have SUVs as well, like that 2001 ML55. What have you guys done to them?

so you're gonna build a Syclone fighter? hehe That would be so crazy to go to the track and see a Trooper running 13s. With the amount of custom work it is going to take to get A turbo on there you may as well go for a twin turbo setup and really kick soe ***

Good luck

Have you seen the guy with the 12 sec Dodge Caravan? His site is hilariuos! Talking about how his wife ditched him because he was so into this project....its a total sleeper too...wouldn't begin to imagine that it could do 12 sec on the strip!

By the way, Troopers are a bit top heavy and tall....ever consider how you are going to compensate for that? I estimate that youre going to need close to 500hp to beat a Syclone...

anything can be done. Since you have a v6, it would be eaier to run a turbo off each bank of cyls (one turbo on each 3 cyls). I would use a small turbo, like a 14b (stock 1st gen eclipse) or t25...something really small. You can add fuel by using secondary fuel injectors before the throttle body...its very easy to do and then you dont have to mod the hell out of the stock fuel system. You will have to add a larger fuel pump most likely..but thats super easy.

I recommend using an intercooler also. Here is the basic prices..

two 3-1 turbo exhaust manifolds (one on each bank) $600 - $700 (for both)
two 14b/t25 turbos around $600 - $800 (for both)
frount mount intercoler $500 - $600 for a large frount mount spearco
piping will cost around $300 - $400 for all the custom piping work
downpipe (turbo to the exhaust) is going to cost around $200 - $300
secondary fuel injectors, fuel pump, and injector controller computer is going to cost around $600 - $800
blow off valve is going to cost around $200, or you can use one off a 1st gen eclipse for like $20 used.

you wont need a wastegate because the t25/14b turbos use internal wastegates.

With 6-10psi it should add a crap load of power and tons and tons of torque. It will be super super fast. I dont know if you will hit 13's..but it will surprise the hell outa the mustangs and comaros.

I am not really very familiarly with the 3.5 V6 in the trooper so i couldnt tell you how much boost you could run on it. But if its a closet deck iron block engine with around 9:1 compression it most likely will hold 15psi easy.

If you really wanna do something like this..i highly recommend you learn more about the 3.5 v6 engine..and how the fuel system works. But with a little bit of time, planning, and money i dont think it should be tooo hard to pull off.

keep us posted!!

Thanks for all the great suggestions. While I am customing my trooper, I think I will rip out the back seats and replace it with a nice little sofa for maximum comfort for my guests.

I worry that even dropped 5" a trooper will still roll way too easy to want to put much extra power on it. Especially if your passengers are going to be in a sofa.
