Default Thinking About DownSizing My Turbo Insight Needed Graph Inside

I'm thinking of downsizing my turbo on my car. I'm looking for more street-ability and a more linear low end graph. In its current state with the Garrett T3/T04E 60./.63 Stage 3 wheel the car pulls great above 5500 - 6000 but the lag kinda bothers me. I'm looking for 400WHP on E85 with the lowest spool possible. Will the Garrett T3/T04E 50 Trim meet my needs at higher boost levels.

Current Setup

JDM B16
GSR Cams
ARP Headstuds
Victor X Intake Manifold
GE Fuel Rail
AEM Fuel Pressure Regulator
JDM 98 GSR Mfactory LSD Tranny

Turbo Parts

RLD Fab Ramhorn Manifold
Garrett T3/T04E 60./63 AR Turbo
K&N Turbo Filter
065. Oil Restrictor
Tial 38 MM wastegate
Tial 9 PSI Spring
Tial 50 MM BOV
Mishimoto Intercooler 31 x 12 x 3
AEM TRU Boost EBC
Go-Autoworks 2.5 Race Charge Piping
Go-Autoworks DownPipe
Go-Autoworks DumpTube
Go-Autoworks Triple Black Pro Oil Kit
ID1000s
Walboro 255HP Fuel Pump
GM 3 Bar Map Sensor
Push-Lock Vacuum Fittings

T3/T04E 60 Trim @ 18psi 365WHP 225TQ @ 8500RPM

I think its somewhat the nature of a b16, there gutless below vtec jus facts, they already do amazing things considering there displacement...the 50 trim isn't going to make it to 400whp (your already at 18psi on a larger turbo)and If it does it will be Inefficent not good for a stock block.maybe the shodan has a recommendation..

Not much for me to add here 92frostwhtdb2 is right. Being a b16 has inherent handicaps; one of them being that it does take more pressure (and thereby more lag) to be able to make 400whp on E85. Going down to a 50 "trim" will not help your cause. Even with the ball-bearing series, under 18psi for 400whp on a B16 needs about 51lbs/min +. This as good as it gets on the B16. That Victor X doesn't help but you're pretty good thus far

you could probably make the same power on a gt28r and have much better spool/transient response

by gt28r i mean gt2871r

No. not with a GT28R. That is only 38lbs/min, and would make only maximum of about 320whp at over 25psi of pressure. Maybe

seems like one hell of a stretch for 28r to be making 400whp even on E85

To the wheels, only the GT2871R would be capable of that with any repeatability. Anything more, and even the GT2860RS is pushed...and pushed hard. It's not recommended, but people have to try things.

that 2871r would still be a much better turbo for e85 and have much much faster response than a 57trim

If its within his budget and he can afford the additional water lines. Otherwise, this whole discussion is rather moot, yeah?

30r is good for 500+ hp, whereas the proper gt28 will get very close to his goals and be very very fast spooling

fyi, my 30r on a 2.0L b series is still slow to spool compared to a 2871r on my d16z6 (former awd epic tuning car)

Nicer to use a 50lbs/min GT3071R. A family member of mine uses that now on a B16 and can't be stopped from that setup. less boost pressure needed, same response as the GT2871R, (Since it can utilize the same exhaust wheel) and still very, very fun.

What about the GT2876R? I cant seem to find any GT2871R with T3 Flange and no internal wastegate. Id be interested in the gt3071R if it would have near the same spool time as the 28R as it would leave me some room to grow.

How would Both the 2871R and 3071R spool compapred to my current JB T3/T04E 60./.63

never personally had a 3071r, i currently have a 3076r and the 2871r absolutely blew it away with .4L less and being on a sohc

if you want room to grow then go with the 30r, but the 2871 will do exactly what your asking with the absolute best response and spool time

From what i've read the 76r is a bad matchup with wheel sizes so it really doesnt do as well as it should

Would switching to a performer X or ITR intake manifold help any instead of the victor X. Id like to get some lower spool time or midrange before I go back for a re-tune on E85 of 425+ if Im gonna continue to use this turbo. How many psi can I push my current turbo to before it falls out of its efficiency range. If I cant reduce spool time I at least want a better Graph and more power. It doesn't have the light switch power I expected it to have more kinda rolls on in anything above 2nd gear.

i dont have a b16 but on my 2.0 s2000 i have a ball bearing garrett 50trim with a .63 hotside. It spools fast and i made 400whp at 14psi. I stoped at 400whp because the stock clutch would not hold any more power. I have also made 500whp with this turbo on my evo. A ball bearing 50 trim is a great super fast spooling 500whp turbo.

here it is on my s2000. IF u look at the boost log, it makes 14psi by 4,000rpm in 4th gear.

Looks like a nice setup. But it looks like that turbo goes for 1500$ on ATPturbo

yeah ball bearing turbos are expensive. you can get a non ball bearing 50trim on atpturbo for $700.

You could Spray to help smooth out your curve, just be sure to ramp it up and ramp it down properly so your not blowing anything then if you feel like, program it to turn off when you hit full boost.
