So I go a shop today...
So I go to a shop today that has a pretty good reputation for building engines, and the guys seemed pretty knowledgeable about what they were talking about. I asked them for a quote on labor for a longblock rebuild. I told them I'd supply all the parts needed to do it and everything, and they told me labor itself without the machine shop costs (which would cost around $500 just to bore it .5mm over stock bore) would be a little over $2,000. Does this seem right? I talked to one of my friends with a Nissan 240 and he said his rebuild only cost $750 at a different place. Were these guys ****** with me or does this seem reasonable?
Most likely one of two scenarios.
1. They weren't interested in your job so they 'priced it out the door'. Maybe they didn't want to take on your project so they came up with a price that was high...either you bite and they get overpaid, or you say screw it (like they expect you to) and they don't have to do it. We used to do this at the caraudio shop I worked at all the time. Shitty old bmw's and stuff we didn't want to work on never got turned away, they got priced out the door
It's actually amazing how many people will pay the extra too.
2. Labor costs double when the parts are not purchased through them. This seems to be a common practice as well.
On the other hand maybe they are just a bit expensive. You said they have a good reputation so you never know...

$500.00 for a bore and hone alone? That better include a deck resurface, head resurface and a damn good back rub, lol. I would have to dig up some of my receipts but I think after tax I paid $135.00 for bore/hone, $105.00 for a deck resurface and $95.00 for a head resurface. Those prices are a little more expensive than other machine shops but it's the only machine shop I have used other than Golden Eagle Mfg. for the past couple years. For labor alone $2,000.00 is a little steep for a bottom end assembly and engine assembly. Is the head completely bare?

Yea I think used car salesman use that 'out the door' term in that way. In this context it is "we give you this price and you walk out the door"

It's pretty common. It happened at our shop...and it's happened to me before in other areas of life. You learn to recognize it...it's not always blatant. Place like Circuit City Roadshop (their caraudio dept) do this ALL the time, but they hide it behind a smiling face. If any of you have reciepts that say "INS CUSTOM" you can bet your *** you paid for 'custom' labor when it may or may not have been necessary. Oh well thats life.
Btw, I hope you weren't giving me the thumbs down like I am a bad guy. Not my fault that some places would rather do that than just say no.

At the Electronics store I work at (it's nation wide in Canada) we use "InsCustoms" to bill out every single bit of labour that those install guys do, it's the ONLY way they get paid. I'm making the commission off the sale, and they make the money off of "InsCustoms". So don't say "may or may not have been necessary" when it's always necessary. "InsCustoms" is used to bill out the $20 for a deck install, or the $200 for a custom fiberglass box, it's all the same.

Is the electronics store you work at in Canada Circuit City? If not how is this at all relevant?
By the way, I didn't mean to sidetrack the **** out of this post
I just have a feeling he was getting the runaround which is what I was trying to say all along.

It's not Circuit City, as we don't have those here. Every single shop in town that has car audio uses the same system for billing out labour.
Anyways, to the topic, your for sure getting the "out the door" price, as that is stupid high for that kind of custom work. Try other places, and even other cities that might be close by.
