Running a turbo open with out a filter?
Hopefully the title makes enough sense for you to get what I am talking about... I recently bought an Si with a turbo system freshly installed and the turbo just had a screen attached to where you would see a pipe/tube that would end with an air filter or just where you would put an air filter on the turbo, eventually I am going to get a filter of some sort hooked up to it, but my main question is, is it ok for right now to drive until I get somthing like that hooked up to it, the screen does seem to do the job but I can not see it stopping certain things while driving... Anyone run there turbo with out a filter system hooked up to it?

That screen mesh doesn't block dust and other crap small like that. For me, better safe then sorry. Put a K&N filter over it and call it a day.

running without a filter is just like running your NA car with only the CAI tube and no filter, only worse. Your gonna get all kinds of dirt, dust and crap into your motor.

try one of these, so you dont have to mock up a intake of sorts. Suppose to work really well and are cheap as **** right now.

on my car I tested before and after on the dyno and only lost 1whp by puttin on a filter VS no filter. this was at 370whp
no filter sooner or later will kill the turbo
I did it twice lol

running without any kinda filter is like running threw a field of bullets without a vest, why do it? do something dude, anything. If you suck something threw your turbo, its VERY possible to ruin your motor. Autozone got some **** that flexes, thats what i got with a filter at the end. you can move it around, it was like 20 bucks...

I'm running a Drag manifold with a stock Integra intake and a K&N for the Integ on my car. I pulled it off on the dyno and it didn't make anymore power with the open turbo.
I did have to get a FAL fan to make it fit.

Wow, ok I think that the Autozone thing sounds good, some sort of flex piping with a filter put on the end... Is that Flex piping strong and not get out of adjustment?

No filter on mine, 2 years, 28000 miles. Pulled the head apart to replace the LMA's + other work a while ago and I did an inspection along the way. No noticeable difference at all, no additional deposits, no scratches on walls or back of the valves, etc... Very slight chipping/dimples on the turbo compressor blades though, but not much of a concern.
Oil changed every 2500-2800 miles. Oil looks clean all the time. I also live in a very dusty area with construction on a daily basis. In fact, you'd get worse oil quality by running rich in comparison to running no filter.
I would like to have a filter, but sometimes it is not an option depending on manifold/turbo/full-size radiator w/ fans, etc....

Ok so, so far I am getting both sides here saying its ok without a filter becuase of their own experience and others saying you need a filter if you want your stuff to last...

I can understand the junkyard HMT crowd not running a filter though, because their entire setups will explode in a couple months anyways
</TD></TR></TABLE>
Some HMT Setups have lasted longer than expensive setups here. However much of a merical they may be, some of them still manage to do it. It's not much different than here. Once you get better parts you're ready to upgrade. No problem with that.
Just think about it this way its about peace of mind, whether it helps or not. A $25-30 filter can save your entire investment, or ruin it too. If you put the filter directly on the compressor housing its liable to melt and get sucked in and destroy your turbo. It's happened before.

I can't believe people still daily drive without an air filter! If a certain setup wouldn't allow me the use of an airfilter I would move on to the next setup, it's that important.

If you think about it it's like having a vacuum running at 150K RPM sucking in dirt and blowing it in your throttlebody....bearings LOVE dirt.</TD></TR></TABLE>
That was probably the most unintelligent comment on Honda-Tech.
I ran for 2 years without a filter, just a screen. I wouldn't suggest leaving it completely open, but don't think some K&N filter is going to save your motor from sucking in dirt/dust.

Why take the chance, spend the $20 bucks at autozone and not have to worry about spending whatever to get a new motor because somebody listened to you. But them guys did go a little overboard.
