rebuild b16 or buy new b18b

question,

1.should i rebuild my b16a that has worn rings with forged pistons and rods and spend about $1500 doing it OR

2. shuold i buy and 95 b18b long block for $600 with 160psi in all 4 cylinders and boost that?

im kinda leaning towards the b18a because it will be cheaper. i could sell the b16 with brand new rings because the rest is good for like $1000 and then get $400 in my pocket towards turbo parts

Re: rebuild b16 or buy new b18b (the.hamburglar)

I say ditch the B16a and go with the B18.. U will gain more torque and displacement. Not saying a 1.6L doesnt have its potencial but IMO the B18 is a better platform motor then the b16......

i don't know guys...with rods and pistons he would be a much happier camper then running around with a stock b18...

Pick up an LS shortblock, slap that B16 head on there. Run less boost and be more happy! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

i rebuilt my motor except i spent an extra 150 dollars to stroke it to 1.8 and change my RS ratio all crazy like, err i bought a b18a block

so dont rebuild the b16 with forged internals? and get a b18b instead?

use the B18B with the B16 head.

no im not doing the ls vtec thing. i dont know that much yet. my b16 blew a couple weeks ago now should i rebuild it or buy an ls motor which will be cheaper?

it will be cheaper for the les, but a b16 with rods and pistons has a lot of potential...i personally would rebuild it

Built B16 or stock LS? Shouldn't even be a question... the built motor will handle more power and have a higher redline to boot.

If it were my money I'd get a LS bottom end and build that, though https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

yeah but to build it will be like twice as much money. is it even worth it. i kinda want to buy an nissan next year with an sr20 swap

whats so great about this ls vtec. i already have a vtec head on the b16 obvisouly. if i wanted a 1.8l vtec i could just buy a gsr and it will be cheaper. vtec=overrated.

boostjunkie757 10-08-2005 10:55 AM

i dont find vtec too overrated...

Re: rebuild b16 or buy new b18b (the.hamburglar)

You shouldn't really speak on it unless you've been in an ls/vtec'd honda. Since when is a gsr swap cheaper than an ls/vtec set up? Try to think before you speak https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif . Not to mention searching saves alot of flaming. I undertand why vtec would seem over rated if you have a bone stock b16 (assuming you have a few bolt ons in an ef chassis). Thay have so little torque you don't really feel that *almost 2 large you dropped. Yes it's a very solid engine and yes their potential is very high but its far from cheap to get. Ls/vtec over b16 anyday.
turbo ls non vtec > b16 ¯_ ls/vtec https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

Re: rebuild b16 or buy new b18b (b 1 6 e g)

build the b16, the engine will last longer gaurenteed, not to mention you can run more boost, b18a/b engines dont have the extra webbing on the block, so they lack strength, also no stiffener on the main caps in the block. the R/S ratio in a b16 is better for boost and you have VTEC, turbos love vtec, the b16 head flows infinitely better than an ls head, IMO you are heavily down grading by going the b18a/b swap, they are cheap for a reason...

well whats a stock ls block (crank/rods/pistons) with a b16 head going to do in the quarter? the b16 sucks.

here where in my town i can get a gsr motor from the junkyard for 800 bucks. and the b18b is 575. and they are clean and good condition kept in a warehouse

i would say save the $600 you ae planning on spending on the b18 long block and buy a blown b18 shortblock for like $50 and build that.

You can get a GSR for $800 in Victoria? Where is this mystical junkyard, 'cause I'm taking the next ferry over http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

I agree that B16's arent the greatest motors to play around with, but if you have a choice right now with what to do.

I'd choose building up the B16 rather than putting another USED LS block in the car.

USED block:
1. Unsure of how long the block will last
2. Oil pump good? may take a dump before you get that Nissan next year
3. 160psi on the compression test? Uh i dont think i'd wanna boost that.
4. Rings might go out soon
5. Old motor = most likely worn or tired out bearings

You dont wanna put the used LS and it have the chance on dying within a few months or even just days.

Spend the money on the rebuilt block so its more reliable and last longer.

LS block and b16 vtec head......

Yeah, let all those guys like Geoff, Courney Green, etc, know that their 700+ and 800+ WHP LS-based setups won't last as long as a B16 because the magical rod/stroke ratio fairy told you so.

Go pickup an LS block in a junkyard, put pistons/rods in that, and put your head on it. End of story. Torque owns some overexagerated rod/stroke ratio bullshit.

I still dont understand the reasoning for getting a USED LS block. Keep in mind that LS/VTEC setups have a weakness in the oil pump so you have to upgrade it to a GSR pump. Then you have to run the oil lines for VTEC and tap the head or get the VTEC conversion kit for the LSVTEC.

At that point, you've spent an easy $500-600 on gaskets, lines, pump, etc plus the price of the block.

And in the end you still have a used block that is prone to breaking down since there could be a chance of WORN out piston rings or WORN out bearings.

I still say REBUILT B16.
