PMS Engine management
What are some of the disadvantages of running the PMS system? I'm looking at it as a cheap engine management right now, to replace the AFC hack. I'm looking to upgrade to most likely EMS, but would like to try out the PMS. Is it worth my time? I've never tuned a standalone but have read a lot about it. Thanks guys.

Like most things there appears to be a good bit of disagreement. Some people complain it is a big headache in a purpule box. Others have gottengreat results. I have know of a couple of tuners that swear by it.
I have one that I am about to install. I got it vs. hondata mainly because for emissions OBDII has to be read in Atlanta. So I could not convert to OBDI. There seem to be lots of nice features, you can do data logging. I would say it does everything most people need.
I don't think you can beat it for the money. But we will see what I say when I get it installed and running.
For not much more than a VAFC you get a lot more.
They are about $1k new. But if you keep your eyes out you can find good deals on Ebay.

I think the biggest disadvantage of the PMS is that it is expensive brand new. If you can pick one up used, it is a good product. I got mine for a very good used price, and I have no regrets. It is very easy to use. Get yourself a wideband and it becomes very simple to tune yourself. Unfortunately, it doesn't have wideband automapping like the EMS. I have found a datalogger to also be helpful for watching the long term fuel trim to dial in the idle and part throttle tables. I'm running 550 cc injectors, and at idle and part throttle my car runs better than stock.
My only minor complaint is with the boost tables. Rather than having a boost map where you can program in fuel and ignition changes per psi, the PMS has you enter fuel and ignition values for 1 psi and then values for your chosen max psi. It then interpolates between the values depending on "load" (boost). It has made it difficult to get a nice flat a/f curve at part throttle operation. Other than that, I like the unit and despite my high intake air temps (JRSC) I never see a/f values above 12.5:1.

Like VTECPWR's situation, we have to keep the OBDII interface intact and operational in Utah in order to pass emissions tests. We have tuned several of these units, N/A, N/A w/ NOS, SC, Turbo, & Turbo w/ NOS. They work very well when properly tuned. We have several different base maps, let me know if you need any help.
sharkcohen, I spoke with Doug W. @ EFI Systems the other day. They have a PMS new unit which allows for tuning at every 500 rpms, has 12 ( I believe) part throttle load points instead of 3, boost now has 9 load points instead of two, includes an internal hard voltage clamp for the stock MAP sensor, includes VTEC control, which all can be accessed through the new hand held unit...and has a new handheld unit with twice the data display. Sounds like they have made great improvements for 2003. We have order one to check it out.

I've had the PMS system for about 7 months or so w/ no problems. I also got mine tuned in Atlanta. I got mine w/ the interaq software but have not had a chance to use it.
Most likely, I will be taking the PMS off really soon to do some troubleshooting for a random stutter probelm. In the mean time, I will probably sell it and borrow a buddy's Hondata to see how I like that. So if anybody is interested, I have a PMS available. I'll be posting it in the FI classifieds.
