i prefer the ls tranny on a ls motor if your only revving to 7000...gearing already seems short on it

fmfkid250 05-07-2007 03:41 PM

ls, gsr you will have to go to 5th in the 1/4
. at leastwith the ls will you can go at least 115

if your looking to make a lot of power(300+) stick to the ls tranny. if not gsr

The OP is using an LS engine, he won't be able to wind out the rpms as much as with a GSR.

LS or type-r but here decide for yourself

Put something together that will meet your needs, it's really the best bet.

alright thanks for the help....im going to price ITR trannies and see if i can handle that making 5.15 an hour ...lol

Re: (a1320addict)

id go with the gsr, i ran the ls on my setup, reving to 8k, was too short, holding me back with my power levels.

Re: (HamiltonRex)

yeah ..GSR sounds good...i've been lookin around and type R tranny is a bit salty...

No i understand that but using a gsr trans will put you in 5th gear at the end of the 1/4 mile?

Re: (slooogsr)

I guess if people are shifting at really low rpms they would end up in 5th by the end of the run, I dunno. I think a lot of people are afraid to rev their non-VTEC engines past 6500 haha. I can't really say because I've just had this same 1990 LS tranny for the last few years, never experienced the GSR's gearing first hand.

aight heres the deal
LS TRANS has THE LONGEST gears for b series. The ls trans is realistically the best trans for the ls cuz when you shift it puts you right back in the " sweet spot" of the ls. A type r trans is the same thing as a b16 trans YOU DON"T WANT THAT. The gsr trans is a good debate and NO you WILL NOT go into 5th with a gsr trans or the ls. Put it this way if your plans are low boost not too much power and stock internals use the gsr, it has a little bit faster gearing so with less hp it will make your car faster, but if you plan on boosting and building over 300hp than i would say stick with the ls trans. You gotta remember a vtec trans is not made to shit at 7k you know. My stock ls on 13psi i used my ls trans and loved it, but its up to you i have personally used both and i am currently using my gsr with gsr trans, like i said low boost gsr higher levels ls but either way you look at it that ls trans is MADE for the ls block the way it revs down low with tq.

honestly it depends on the purpose of the car if its DD the ls or Y1 trannies are fine if its gonna be a strictly race car the S4C and S80 are the way the go. or if you want a more personal feel build an ls with it 1-3 gears an then put in type-r 4-5 gears. the main goal is to get traction an put power to the wheels.

Re: (tony413)

Yea, LS is cool for daily driver. 5th gear is nice for cruising where a gsr at 90mph is damn near 5k rpm. If your not big on interstate cruising get the gsr. It will be best for racing around town. Also save your money for an lsd. That was like night and day for torque steer.

Re: (sp00led)

i asked the same question a long time a go never going to get a strait answer but the Margarette of the racers iv talked to are running short gears just met a guy last week in he had a ls engine and a gsr tranny turbo running 10:17 or something like that I'm running the s4c love it I'm going in to 5th wright now but ones i get mine to tern more rpm it well pay off
