ls or gsr for boost on budget?!?!?!?!?
I am really confused now on what i want to do...im pretty sure i want to go boost...but on a budget....i have an EJ HB...and i was thinking about just going all out and saving money on a gsr and boosting it stock for a while and bulding a spare block on the side...but either way...gsr +turbo kit and EMS = well over 3 or 4 k.
So I was thinking of gettin my self a torqy ls motor with a vtec tranny...maybe gsr for better gas mileage and semi building it..u know the the whole rods and piston thing ...nothing huge...and and getting a turbo kit for that.
Im pretty sure either setup should rip ***....i dont wanna like runs 10's and ****.. like is a gsr so much worth it than an ls...?just want sumthing fast...but dont wanna spends nothing over like 5 or 6 k u get me ...help me out here HT , just a lil confused

Well, doing it on a budget can be done, but doing it right is another story. I spent an assload of money but I know that it's been done right with the right parts. Let me post my price sheet (most of these things were bought on honda-tech) to show you the breakdown on where my money went:
This is going into an Integra GSR, so buying a motor isn't needed.

haha, my girlfriend is making me keep track of all the money I spend on my car for hte turbo upgrade. So Excel to the rescue! I didn't think I spent that much, but when I added it up... I had an additional 1100 in the graph for my twin disc clutch, but I got ripped off by Moto-C. I got my money back, but not sure if I want do buy a twin disc now since I'm going to be on the stock motor (low boost) for a long while until I can afford to build a block.

damn ...pretty bad *** setup but that really doesnt help with my decision.... BTW i forgot to mention that i want to go with a bit higher compression on an LS if I go with it...so that i dont need the high boost to get power and keep pretty good throttle response.....so yea bad *** setup and good luck but come on guys i need to set my mind straight .....thanks...
Im guessing a lot of that stuff is used.
You may be able to save a few bucks on an ECU/basemap/harness from Chris at xenocron.com
I also got a radiator off ebay brand new for $90, and AEBS head studs from Camp1320 for cheaper than $115 (I think).
A lot of the HT Sponsors will cut you a deal if you buy several things from them. You can save on shipping, and sometimes negotiate a few bucks off, depending who you are buying from.

The only things that were used were the Exhaust manifold, the intercooler and pipes, the ECU obviously, and the oil pan. I bought from advertisers on HT, the head studs wastegate and exhaust came from the same place. They aren't the cheapest, but I know I won't get screwed over and all of those prices include shipping.
To the OP, I would do a GSR for a higher revving motor stock and one that can handle boost a little bit better than an LS. It costs more, but if you ever build the motor you can always get an LS crank in that GSR motor to have it a bit torquey. Of course you'd have to use LS rods and pistons, but you'd be buying those anyway if you were building it. That's what I plan to do BTW.

Reasons, because lots of local guys are telling me to just do an LS, and I'm curious to see why?

well like i said...ls built is still alot cheaper than a gsr motor alone...and if you slap on i gsr or b16 tranny you rip through the gears hard IMO....BTW saturn2racing was like a reply only i forgot i was signed in from my friends computer....
So yea any more opinions....i mean going gsr is going to cost me at least another 2k....just tunning a vtec car alone is harder IMO, hence more money.....like if i can have a 12/13 second car i am more than happy for the time been.....and use the money for a paint job or sumthing....
Ask u can see im am bias for the LS, however the GSR will always be stuck im my head...and thats y i made this thread lol

how much HP are you looking to get? If its less than 400 I would go with the LS. Its pretty easily attainable up to that point. After that you really have to get into getting the head to flow much better and upgrading the whole lot of head parts. Also I would love to see where you are getting a lot of your parts for so cheap nebulight. Some of that is incredibly cheap.

It seems that your mind is pretty made up on the LS. Like the above post said, if you don't want more than 400whp stick with the LS. Like you stated it's cheaper and will be an easier tune.

The intake manifold I got a STEAL on ebay. I think the seller didn't know what he had. I got it for 170, but he charged me $50 bucks for shipping.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...i%3D1
I also go a steal on the full race setup. I bought the manifold and a different DP for 700 bucks. The DP was rewelded and cut in half so I sold it for 240. So the price of the mani came out to be 460. Here is my sold DP:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1723505
And here was the original purchase:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1685330
And I also bought the Full-Race DP from Jeff Evans brand new, he had extras and was having a shop sale.
Now the injectors were a different story. I traded a digital camera for them that I bought REALLY cheap for $129. The camera retailed for $400. And the BOV, the guy just was selling it cheap:
http://hondamarketplace.com/zerothread?id=1677686
So my prices that I got weren't normal, just really good deals. And they all happened about in about 2-3 months. You just have to check honda-tech EVERYDAY a couple of times a day to get first dibs on the good deals. However I think I bought at the right time because lots of people were selling to get rid of their stuff at the start of summer to fund other projects.

1. reason is non vtec parts are alot cheaper to buy
2. lower compression in stock form
3. cheaper to buy
4. easier to find
5. ls tranny is better geared for boost. we can have another discussion about that also if u like.
6. ls can handle 10 psi daily driven I wouldnt do more than 8psi in stock form on a gsr
These are just a few reasons and I can go on all day.

i mean yea im looking for a dialy driver so I dont want crazy horsepower....so i guess LS it is for not untill i change my mind again....i mean.....im pretty sure in a hatch back with a bit higher compression ratio on an LS and short tranny and boost...i could be in the low 13's...if my friend in his DA ran a 14.2 on 7 pounds on a less potent motor heavier shell and super super super small turbo...i think i should be in the 13's
it just kinda bothers that the gsr will always be more or less the daddy... and that i dont have that vtec....but hey ....im not rich

good reason...but about the tranny...yea ive always like the longer gearing stuff....but if you go in a car with a high final drive or simply short gear, like a b16 tranny or so....you would like to put that on top of all that torque on the ls....but then again...if you can grip, all that suks....but acceleration on the highway will be nuts

i mean yea its good for boost....but i think a gsr would just be right.... just wondering about something....OK, the wiring harness of a non vtec 98 ob2 will fit right into a lets say 2000 integra auto motor correct...now if i have to run a couple of wires and stuff like that if i plug in an AEM EMS would if realy all the **** correctly?...Just out of curiosity because im looking at a great deal on a 2000 b18b but its automatic
i suggest you get the gsr motor only cuase you said you cant help but think of gsr even though everyone including you said the ls motor will be cheaper and in the long run if you get the ls your gonna wonder how it would be if you had a gsr.im only tellin you this cuase i was in the same but it was a turbo d or b16 swap.i ended up doing the swap but now im gonna sell it and with the money fully build a d for turbo. do what you want not what honda-tech want. good luck on the build
Thanks for the advice...well like i said the gsr will be stuck im my head...but i want to go with LS because i need sumthing fast asap im tired of my stock d motor....and in realilty i wanna know if you build a gsr (just rods and pistons) and do the same to the ls....except on the ls you up the c/r a bit more and use a gsr tranny.....is there really a huge difference in peformance that is worth over $2000?
of course it worth it its VTAK
.just joking but seriously dont rush it if you get the ls your gonna want vtec,if you get vtec your gonna want sleeves,if you get sleeves your gonna want fiberglass windows and a cage do you see how it goes its an endless cycle cuase you my friend are a junky just like the rest of us who just wanted a intake then muffler then headers. in the end it comes down to you do you want a high compression, high reving stock motor or do you want to put arp rod bolts and higher compression piston on the ls motor like you said.

you should stopo repeating the bs that everyone sais on these forums. just because ls transmissions have longer gearing, doesnt make them better for boost.
an ls can handle 25 psi daily driven if its built and tuned right.... it has nothing to do with psi, its how much power its putting out. you wouldnt go 8 in stock form? theres ******* hitting 15 pounds in stock form on a SOHC
