Loud knock in head?!
l Long story short i had coolant in my oil. its s fully built ls vtec. I thought it was the head gasket so i took apart the head n found out i connected the iacv to a vacuum source. Yea yea i know. This is a freshly built motor straight from the machine shop. The car only idled for 5mins n.just reved it a couple times when i was getting street tuned but i stopped there when i saw white smoke from the exhaust n found coolant in my oil. I took the head to machine shop to.have them.check it out before i put everything back. The head was fine. Today i finished the car put the head back on blah blah. I go to start it n it does but wont stay running. My tuner said leave it its probably the tune. But when it.starts i hear a loud knocking coming from the head... I never had this before. The car won't stay on cuz of the the tune but my tuner comes 2marrow to street tune n its bothering what it is. I did a valve lash n adjusted the intake .007 n the exhaust to .009 its a b16 head with itr cams. I did 1,3,4,2 moving the crank counter clockwise. I.did that correct right? As for timing i have the cam gear loved up perfectly but the crank is a little past the line going towards the front. i heard its normal on ls vtec n having the head milled a couple times. Will this knock.go. away? Did i.do something wron? is some thing bent? plz help
Ok you have the cam timng all wrong. you need to line up the crankshaft mark perfectly and when lining up the cams they will bth be tiped forward a little to compensate for the head milling. right now you have both cams retarded probably 3-4 degrees which is why it wont stay running.
The head has been only milled twice. I.had the timing just like this before n ran perfect. I could be wrong. Im just going off personal experience. Did i do the opposite?

thats not normal for an ls vtec to have anything milled.... If you took too much material off of the head timing can be off by as much as 1 or 2 teeth if you time it back to stock.
The loud noise could have been anything from valves contacting each other, to valves hitting the piston which is why it might not be running

Why would it not be "normal" for an LS-V to have anything milled? If anything is out of spec, it should be taken care of - period.
In this situation speculation is asinine; post a video or actually do some investigative work yourself.

normally things arent out of spec unless something happens, I've never seen a head warp unless the motor was overheated or it wasnt torqued/untorqued properly. Things just arent milled as a standard
I dont even know where to start with this guy... my advice: take it to a shop and let an experienced mechanic do the work

I would hope that the first thing he did after he noticed that was do an oil and filter change before he started trying to run the motor again
Figured it out. Did my valve lash too loose. No more knocking now. But i am getting white smoke out my exhaust... The pervious motor had a lot of coolant in the motor due to a connecting a coolant hose to a vacuum source. The isnt fully tuned yet due to it rained cuz im street tuning first. My tuner just tuned it so it would idle safe. Is it just the excess coolant burning off? It smoke a little at idle but looks like condensation but if i just tap the gas i get a nice amount of white smoke. Doesnt smell sweet tho. Could it be the tune? Its running really rich. Have not drove the car yet.
The head is brand new from the machine shop with new everything. I am using a blox 72mm tb and the coolant hose coming from the iacv i tapped and t'ed it with the other hose on the iacv that going to the coolant tube on the back of the block is it ok to bypass is like that?

i would hope so... the coolant would burn off almost immediately.. so something else is wrong.
pull the downpipe off the turbo and see if theres oil residue in the downpipe and turbine housing... if so you've either got bad valvestem seals or a bad turbine seal

I figured out what was the problem this time. I drained my oil again n found coolant all mixed together so i knew something was up again it has a brand new hg, head, block. I took apart the pipe to the intake manifold n saw coolant in my tb. So somehow coolant is getting in my tb. I bypassed the tb coolant hose. But i never took apart the pipe when i took off the head i left intake pipe connected to the intercooler n just took the head off like that, I discounted the pipe from the intercooler n coolant gushed out. My fault i didnt clean the whole system i totally forgot coolant would be in, but there was from the previous time i had coolant in my oil. So when i opened up the throttle a lil the car would suck some coolant up from the intercooler. Makes sense so i took it all apart cleaned everything n will be getting tuned on sunday

you might just want to pull the cams off really quick and check the journals, cams and rockers for scarring... since coolant severely things out the oil
