Default Knock Sensor

Is it necessary to have the knock sensor on a B16? Does the ecm retard the timing if it sees knock? The reason I am asking is that I can get a knock gauge that will show the severity of detonation. This could be a good tuning tool. The only catch is that it only works with a GM knock sensor so the Honda sensor would have to be discarded. If the ecm does not retard the timing I could just plug the sensor in so no DTC is stored in the ecm (to keep the check engine light from coming on) and put the GM sensor in the stock location and wire it up to the gauge. Any one try this or know any more info on the subject?

you can put a knock sensor anywhere on the block, so you could use both? you just have to screw it into some hole, which you could easily tap...just a thought.

I've heard that VTEC won't engage on engines with out a knock sensor.

Don't know if it's true, or just for older ones...
