Knock meters

Has anyone ever used one of these? Are they any good? i want to monitor knock on my boosted B16.
I dont have a Knock sensor currently so i would have to get one but thats not hard.

I was thinking of getting one that is circular and fits in a 2 1/16 pod like this..

its audible,so it actually makes noise while the LED's light up.

Do you know if that Gauge comes w/ it's own sensor or do you run it off of the OE unit? Thanks

gotta buy your own sensor, I think Gm sensors work on hondas and are not too sensitive.

Do you know if it has different sensitivity settings(The gauge that is)?

i got the r-500 wideband

it reads knock on it with the stock sensor

Boostage Jan 1, 2006 10:56 AM

Re: (hondaguyef)

No it doesnt, its a simple $80 peice that you can make for about half of that, you are looking for something with a controller which will cost you.

crispydee Jan 1, 2006 11:02 AM

Re: (komat)

That looks good but is abit more expensive than the one i first posted. I have emailed them tho to see how much the shipping will be to the UK. If its not bad i might get one. Any more ideas would be great.

the ebay one is cheap because its shit from radio shack. u can make that for $10 in parts.

have you ever made one? if so how?

No never made one, but I have made a shift light before. and I am not great with electronics.

Re: (HamiltonRex)

all a knock sensor is is a piezo electric sensor which when it detects knock it creates its own voltage, the only hard part about a knock sensor is how you read it, you would have to know at which voltage the knock sensor is creatin enough voltage to which the "knock" is actually "knock" and not engine noise

That's what I'm concerned with.

Re: (hondaguyef)

The best way to do it would probably be to install the knock sensor on totally stock car see what it reads there than take it to your turbo car and see what it does on there. I think the only big noise makers would be the valvetrain and vtec coming on and those would probably only get to a certain voltage....

crispydee Jan 2, 2006 01:51 AM

Re: (Adi Radoncic)

The thing that concerns me with the ebay one is that it is adjustable. How do you know if you have knock or its just to sensitive? the other one posted looks better.

I suppose you could retard your ignition loads and set up the meter like that so you have no knock then advance your ignition till it changes.

Anyone know where the info is on how to make one?

richeybrooks Jan 2, 2006 01:08 PM

Re: (crispydee)

you adjust it. do a pull through the rpms with no boost, adjust it so there is no noise showing up on the sensor then do your boosted pulls and see the knock.

thats caspers shit and the only bad thing about that, is it needs a buick knock sensor, and you need to drill and tap a 1/4 pipe thread hole for it.

5litereater Jan 2, 2006 01:25 PM

Re: (richeybrooks)

correct me if im wrong but isnt there a setting on some turbo timers (i wanna say apex i) that read a voltage signal which is directly correlated to your knock voltage reading?

essentially your knock sensor should show little to no voltage until there is severe enough vibration for the piezzo crystal to make contact with the terminal in the sensor...which means if you had a voltmeter wired directly into your knock sensor circuit, you could monitor your knock without use of a wideband or expensive gauge setup.

let me know if this sounds far-fetched but it seems like a reasonable, more cost effective alternative.

Use a knock sensor and amplify the signal using a tape player and listen to it with headphones. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif
