Intake Temperature Sensor

Is it necessary to tap this into the air filter pipe?

I had mine dangling for about a year with no problems. I eventually put it into my upper charge pipe, which I hear isn't that great since it reads boosted air temp, but so far, no problems there either.

I tapped my charge pipe, fitted a rubber grommit in there and was good to go...
