Default How to overcome flat engine tone with turbo?

Quick question. Pretty much every boosted engine that I have heard that sounds like its actually on motor, has been a ridiculously built engine.

I dont want much power, but I am considering having more power. I am honestly a form > function type of guy when it comes to stuff. I took a perfectly fine H22 out of my Prelude for the F20B, simply because it wails better at the top of the RPM range.

So, I want boost but I dont want it to have that flattened engine note. I want it to sound like its on engine, just with the spooling, like you hear on high powered cars. Obviously, I'll forego turbo if it cant be done without some crazy build.

You'll get flamed. It's all in what exhaust you use

I have no idea what you mean by "on motor"

this all seems a bit silly if it's what i'm thinking of.

you want it to spool all the time??
Im lost.

Any boosted motor will stock stock untill the turbo spools up for a few sec. Then it will sound like a jet follow by blowoff valve. then return to normal.

Now if your just wanting to turbo for sound. Then get a turbo whistle thing from ebay that goes into your muffler.
Or a very small turbo like a k03, even tho it will hurt your power but it will give you your sound.

I guess I have to explain better.

Turbos typically flatten the exhaust tone, losing the high rpm wail of a Honda engine. I want to turbo for power, but I dont want the flattened exhaust tone. I have heard some engines still sound "all motor" but just with the spooling. That is what I want. I dont know what needs to be done to still sound like I'm on engine.

Its not the turbo noise that is the concern, but the engine note. I want the engine nose to overpower the turbo's flattening.

The sound of the turbo spooling is a beautiful noise, and no matter what exhaust you have the turbine will dampen the exhaust note to some degree. If you really wanted a turbo then have your WG dump to atmosphere, that will give you your annoying "all motor" sound as best as you can get with a turbo.

With all the money and time it takes to get a turbo setup sounds like you would be a lot happier going NA anyway? You can get a reasonable amount of power doing that anyway, sounds like it would be plenty for you.

I think I want more power than NA can provide. I just dont need 500 WHP and useless 1/2/3 gears. I have a full weight last gen Prelude so unlike a stripper hatch, I cant run 12's on 220 WHP. So its either turbo or stays as is (bolt ons + tune)

Anyway I guess I need to look up some vids, and hope what I find arent a car by car basis. I would be pissed to turbo my car, pay extra to keep AC and PS and have it sound like doodoo.

Always could opt for nitrous

Seems kinda ridicolous exhaust note would prevent you from turboing a car. Cant understand your logic there as being a deciding factor of whether or not to turbo.

Try different exhaust piping materials. Aluminum makes a huge difference in sound.

My mother always say if I can't say something nice just don't say anything.... I hate Ricers!
ain't no better sound than a Turbo car ripping down the track. I was at the track this weekend, and a ten second Honda made my dick harder than the sound of a 8 second supercharge Chevrolet Belair, or a 8 second all motor Bug.

Aluminum didn't make that much of a difference compared to stainless with my electric cutout, but it might on a full exhaust. The sound of my spooling turbo with the cutout open is sexy time to my ears!

Hell yes ^^^^^

I spanked an sti last night and he was tripping out when I went from, beasty *** open downpipe, to a quiet stock sounding civic.
Felt sooo good man.

Also OP has a mega riced out prelude. He's trying to rice out the exhaust note too I guess.

a turbo is classified as a muffler. Take your turbo off to get your ricer exhaust tone back.

this thread either sucks or blows, depending on whether it's NA or turbocharged

HAVe you even hear of an super turbo muffler. From what I hear these mufflers have a internal turbo that keeps the noise down and the engine runs cooler because t
The turbo is in the back.

I take a hard stance on things. I have a Fidanza 8lb, and ACT 6 puck simply to make it sound a certain way when I change gears, and its completely overkill for what I have. Sound is THAT important.

That's pretty much the same thing as saying "I dumped my car so low to the ground because I like the sound my exhaust makes when it scraps along the pavement"

This is a tech forum. Most people in this area of the forum are far beyond Function > Form, including myself.

If you are worried about your "IMAGE" or what other people think of your exhaust note when accelerating, shifting and generally driving like a monkey on the street (since it is obvious you do not track your prelude with a mentality like that) than YOU ARE IN THE WRONG FORUM. Appearance/Cosmetic forum is calling your name.

Try open dp threw hood. Other then that it's like pissing in the lake.

My skunk2 70mm exhuast was very loud and annoying on my NA setup. After I got the turbo kit on its descent. But if you want you car to sound like a NA keep it NA
