Default best tranny for boost?

i have a hydro b16 tranny atm and im planning on taking my b18c5 out and sellin it to get as gsr to build and boost. and i was just wondering what tranny would be the best to mate up to the gsr for boost, someone said my b16 tranny would be good, but others say the gears are way too short..i was thinking about doin a ls..but im not too schooled in the art of boost.

thanks in advance

Either one will work fine. The LS gear will reduce acceleration rate a bit. Here are your choices.

I'm in the same situation right now. I think the gsr tranny would be the best all around, and if possible add the ls 5th gear for highway driving.

Even though its boosted, you dont want to much gear because you will still be losing acceleration.
whats your hp goal?

One thing im looking at is, you dont want to have to shift into 5th gear before the end of the track (assuming you will be drag racing it)
if you run 23" slicks and have a rev limiter of 8200rpm
with a b16 tranny you will hit the rev limiter at 115.24mph in 4th
with a usdm gsr tranny you will hit the rev limiter at 123.38mph in 4th
if your planning on reving it higher or have smaller slickes that will change.

Here is a gear calculator to play around with.

I've been building my car recently and I did a B16 trans with a LS final drive and countershaft. That setup places the gearing in between a B16 and GSR.

I also had a friend who ran a 10.7 @ 134mph and was in 4th gear at 8800rpm on a B16 trans. He had 24.5in slicks I believe, so a B16 can definately be used.

i will throw my 02 in the ring, i used a b16 on an old setup and it worked well, i swapped to a b16 1-2-3- gsr 4th. nets me 148mph traps on 24.5" tires. i am also reving to 10.5k. my trap rpm is around 95 9600. i am actually going to swap back to a b16 4th because i broke another 4th gear set.

if you have the valvetrain and the power to rev it out, a b16 isnt always a bad choice.

for 300whp a B16 is good. With not having that much power with a short geared tranny it will rip pretty good. Once you start getting into 400+whp is when you want to think about a GSR / Ls tranny.

There was a thread in the accord section that was discussing trannies not too long ago. From what I remember the b-series trannies are best in terms of choices of gearing, but they are the weakest for handling power. Maybe someone can shed light on the actual strength of these.

LS tranny is not the way to go period. Gears are just to darn long. If you need a tranny in a pinch then its fine but otherwise stay away. GSR is the best all around but also depends on power production. 300whp range with a b16 gearset should work very well and act like a gsr with more hp and have a better acceleration rate. You can also opt to install an LS final drive into it for more gear or even an Mfactory 4.06 final drive. What alot of people do is install ls final drive and 5th gear for highway driving.

Personally im running GSR gearset with Cable LS 5th gear and LS final drive and i couldnt be happier. The little extra ger from the final drive matched with the ls 5th gear makes highway driving enjoyable and gas comsumption at a tolerable rate. You could also opt for the hydro 5th gear which is even longer gear than the cable for better highway rpms. there are many factors but you can go wrong with a straight gsr trans and for your power goals b16 will also geturdone

When your making good power, SHORT 1st and 2nd gears are USELESS!!!

If your having traction issues at all your going to hate any tranny with tight gearing. spinning all the way through 1st and 2nd is gay. finally hooking 3rd and then making up for lost time is not the best plan of attack

Sorry to tell ya, but that's just a lot of power in an FWD application, no matter what transmission you use from the honda line. the sooner that is understood, the quicker this thread can come to rest..

spinning 1st and 2nd isn't gay. hell most cars spin 1st 2nd and 3rd. and still smoke any car out there while spinning. any boosted Honda spins like hell at any power level. shorter gears makes for faster acceleration.. so the tighter the gearing the better. go with the gsr tranny and you'll be more than happy.

i've got a ls turbo on 12 pounds and have the ls tranny. yeah they are right the acceleration is a but slow from a dig. but its not that bad. i have beaten civic areound here with the b16 tranny with ease. its pretty much all up to the driver. i chose the ls for longer gears meaning i hold boost longer plus when im cruising on the freeway @ 70 i think is at 4200 rpm so is not to loud,

i used to run an LS tranny and thought the car was wicked quick, i ripped the LS to shreds and came across a GSR for a good price. I will never go back to the LS, the GSR keeps me in boost and just pulls alot better.

its a daily driver or just weekend fun

b16 or type r is what i would go with.

i had a b16 in my 430whp , it was a blast to drive around. highway wasnt even that bad 3800rpm 70mph. getting 38mpg too

if you have a ls tranny and its at 4200 you are going way faster then 70mph

gsr also has a bigger and tougher diff then the ls and b16, so they wont break as easy. I learned the hard way haha.

Here is a gear calculator to play around with.

this is the best website...use this to calculate what u need
if you dont have the money to buy different tranny, you can change tire size to compensate for gearing

if you have like 200-300 whp, go with b16
300-500 go with gsr
500+ go with an LS

thats my rule of thumb

never go with a ls.. there weak and gears are just to long. you fall out of boost to easy having a ls.. gsr all the way. you dont want long gears. LS is just wrong for every setup.
