Bad Tune or what?

Okay I have a boosted 2000 Civic Si with,

Stock B16A2 Block
Bored .20 over
SRP 9.1:1 Pistons
Eagle H Beam Rods

Turbonetics t3/t4 .57 trim .63 a/r
Drag exhaust manifold
38mm Cheapo Wastegate - 11 PSI Spring
Greddy Bov
RC 550cc injectors
2.5" Downpipe
2.5" Exhaust
Drag I/C 6.5" height
Hondata S300
Walbro 255

The tuner was able to bring out 251 whp on 11 psi but these numbers sounds to low to me. He told me the bearings were going out in the turbo and it was causing me a powerloss but from what I've saw with others setups I should atleast be 270+ whp on 11 psi? What's the problem? Is the tune bad?

I'm planning on rebuilding the turbo, getting a full 3" from turbo out, and a new tune and I'm wondering if I should go back to this shop.

Heres my dyno sheet. Lemme know what you think!

Let me see a pic of the dyno plot. You can email me the calibration also.

Re: Bad Tune or what?

from the dyno, looks like something is choking it off up top, it drops boost a bit, but should pull higher than that. numbers seem fine for a 9:1 b16 to me

Re: Bad Tune or what?

For 9:1 CR, looks right for this turbo size and a Drag log manifold.

where was it tuned?
whats your wideband saying idle and in acceleration?

Re: Bad Tune or what?

The IC is on the smaller side, but should be big enough. The exhaust could be the dealbreaker, unless it's a straight-through muffler. The tuner could believe (like the tuner I know) that B16's love to break stock sleeves, and used a very conservative timing map. But with torque dropping so fast at 7k, it may be a restriction issue somewhere.

Why would you pay all that money for a new exhaust when you can crank boost up to 20psi? If the turbo is indeed blown, it will eventually fail regardless of new exhaust or more boost. FYI I saw a 50hp gain just by replacing a failing ebay turbo with a new turbo (same turbo, same ebay seller), so it's possible the thrust bearing is stealing power.

Re: Bad Tune or what?

I think the turbo is robbing you of power... on a 11psi and a 57 trim... you should be close to 300whp...

Exhaust is a slight restriction... Replace the turbo and get a new tuner

Here's where I had it tuned in Phoenix Az http://www.xactdyno.com/

I don't have a wideband as I just let the tuner use his and figured I didn't need one.

From what I've heard opening up the exhaust to 3in out can give you 15whp+ so I'll do that then ill ramp up the boost.

I just gave a turbo shop a call and they said it'd be $200 to replace the bearings at the lowest.

Thanks for all the help so far guys. Really hoping to figure this out.

seems a little low....my # might help stock b16a t3/t4 garrett .63 57 trim. ramhorn, 3inch down pipe and exhaust. made 325whp at 11 psi

Yea this is why I question my tune...

Even though you have a couple things upgraded you have 75 whp on me with same turbo and psi.

Re: Bad Tune or what?

this could be a sign of turbo failure. sounds more like the thrust bearings themselves are wearing against the shaft. "blown seals" isn't the only way a turbo can die over time.

So this is a rebuildable fix correct? Or do I need to spring for a new turbo?

I'm taking it down to a turbo shop one of these days when I get it off the car.

Re: Bad Tune or what?

based on that chart showing boost....once it spools the pressure is steady....so it may be the tune.

Is it possible they have the dyno settings all messed up? maybe put it on another dyno to see

sorry not to thread jack, i was just telling you how my tune went...

but yeah i say we try another tuner... lol good luck.

Re: Bad Tune or what?

No it's fine, but yes I'm hoping my power loss is just a combination of maybe a not so great tune with a failing turbo (that I hope can be fixed by being rebuilt?)

Are they a reputable tuner? Because I'd rather just take my car there and get it retuned then just find out if the other tuner was bad or not. Really just want one of the best tuners in Arizona.

Also, would an idle problem directly reflect the tune? While the car is warming up the idle jumps back and forth.

Re: Bad Tune or what?

Locash is definitely a good tuner. He's a member on here too, "locash"
