For the flywheel side you just take the oil pan off and unbolt the cover and it is pressed into the cover. Pound it out of the cover and press a new one in.... reinstall cover....

You have to remove the tranny/flywheel first..

Make sure you press the new one in perfectly evenly and do not deform the seal edge..

use a large flat object then hammer it to get an even presure in the opening..

tap it slightly around the edges...

The trick to install the font main and the rear main seal is to use the old seal to tap it in, meaning take the old seal and place it on top of the new one, by doing this it will prevent damage to the new seal when it is being tapped in by a mallet or a hammer.

Just my 2 cents..

true, they're pretty cheap, less than 20 bucks for a set, or just take it to a dealer and sneak in the back to the mechanics and have them do it for you for 5 bucks

you just have to remove everything from the oil pump side and install the new seal, what you have to pay attention to is when you place the seal over the crank and in the socket that you did'nt pull the seal spring out of place because that is what will give you the leak,. place it in carefully making sure when you are pressing it in that the inner edge of the seal did'nt pinch and push it with your fingers as far as you can, then you could use a flat tip brass punch and tap it in gently will work.

what about replacing the seal without taking the oil pump from the car? can't i just tap the seal in a little at 5 o'clock and then jimmy it out little by little?

the reason it may have leaked the first time is that the seal of the inner lip was being compromised by the slight wear path of the old seal. Generaly you want to install oil seals at a different depth so they make their own sealing surface.
Just push it in an extra 2mm and it will have a better chance of sealing reliably.
ya also make sure it isn't folded up inside like someone already said.

for doing front seals in the car you can use a curved bar of some sort to pry against the body of the car. it can give you much better control than using a hammer and drift, if there is even room for that.

Also check the area where the seal fits into. If it is dinged or out of round, your leak could be there. You should be able to look at where the seal is touching the crank snout and see why it failed. When all else fails, replace the pump and it will come with a new seal. That pump costs around $150 and lots of extra work because of the half shafts (as you well know )
