Default 400 whp with 91?

I am shooting for 400-420 whp on pump gas at 4500 feet elevation. A very experienced Hydra tuner is telling me it won't happen with 91 octane. Is it possible or am I delusional?

Depends on torque not HP. If you are doing this with a B16 it's no problem, but a stock head LS will be harder to control detonation

It is going to be a 81.5mm 9:1 GSR block/stock head. I'm looking to make as much power as you are.

alright man. you got the right turbo for the job. gt30's are goor for like 550 whp on a 4 clyinder application. for that power i would use a tubular top mount manifold. i would rock an aeromotive a1000 fuel pump. cam gears, aem ems, probably 600+ cc injectors. last but not least. sleeve the motor and JE 9.2-1 pistons with eagle rods. with all that its gonna be 18 psi. that's gonna put you at like 435.

Yeah, the atmospheric pressure is still pretty high (12.68 psi) at that elevation, so that shouldn't be too bad with that big of a turbo. Obviously your tune is going to be the most important part, but it should be attainable. You are going to need a bit more boost than the California guys, though.

I think what you listed is quite overkill for the amount of power he wants to make. The a1000 is way to big, a intank walbro 255lph HP is plenty. AEM EMS is probably to much too, hondata would be a better choice I think. I agree with the 600+ injector size, maybe like 880cc or 1000cc. He already stated that it will be stock block. Stocks sleeves will be fine for 400-450 which is what he wants. The power that you want is very possible and would be very fun to drive on the streets!

A top mount would be too laggy for a street application. A lot of your recommendations are way overkill for my power goals. Here is my setup:

81.5mm GSR block stock sleeves
GSR head
Wiseco 9:1 pistons
Eagle Rods
880cc Precision injectors
CTR cams
Supertech valvesprings
Crome Pro
SLS shorty manifold
GT3255E
3" turbo back exhaust, no cat

I have no doubt it will make the power within its efficiency range at the altitude, I am more concerned with the octane of the fuel supporting the power.

Only an idiot would use 91 if 93 was available somewhere nearby.

Hell yeah!

If only it was available where I am. We don't even have 100 octane available at any gas stations in town.

It can happen certainly...

But how long before you get a bad tank of gas...or an injector or FPR clogs up for a slight second? Those levels are borderline...good tuner or not.

My suggestion if you need to make that kind of power on pump gas...Water Injection

Thanks for the reality check.

I forgot to mention that it will only see 400-420 whp at the track. It is a daily driver and I would like to keep it around 350 whp around town. Should I be fine with my current plans?

Id say put some 93octane fuel in there. Fire that thing up and let it rip. Your setup is good. Just put it all together and make it run.

I don't have access to 93 octane. I guess this concept is harder for everyone to grasp than I thought it was going to be.

Then use 91 octane with some octane booster to give it alittle kick. Then you would be at 92octane.

Your set-up looks good, but if you haven't already bought the manifold I would highly consider getting a full-race ramhorn with a 44mm wastegate. This is a extremely good manifold and would leave you with a lot of room to grow if you ever wanted to try and make more power. I don't think you need to drop to 9.1 piston compression for only around 15lbs, but once again if you do put in 9.1 pistons it would also give you room to grow in the future if you want too. But besides that you be set to go and tune with that.
